Zoology Students Become Teachers for a Day at Local Elementaries
By Addison Miller
Second graders at Pineview and Westside Elementary Schools recently got an up-close look at the animal kingdom, thanks to a visit from Ms. Katie Huber’s Zoology class from Reedsburg Area High School.
High school students showcased animals they have been researching, either bringing a pet from home, a class animal, or giving a detailed presentation.
The project had multiple goals, according to Huber. One vision was to “bring them back to their roots,” allowing the high schoolers to reconnect with their own elementary school experiences.
Another key goal was to build the high school students' confidence. It can be nerve-wracking for students to stand in front of their peers, Huber explained, but teaching younger students offers a different, more comfortable dynamic.
“Second graders aren't super scary,” Huber said.
Huber also emphasized the importance of introducing younger students to a wider variety of animals at a young age, "so they know that there's just more than dogs and cats."
The reaction from the elementary students, she noted, made the effort worthwhile.
“Getting to see little kids excited about animals is awesome,” Huber said.
Overall, the collaboration between the schools has been a major success. According to Huber, the visits have gone very well, with engaged students and well-behaved animal ambassadors.
“No crazy poop stories or stressed out animals,” Huber said.
Mrs.Huber's Zoology students gave presentations at local elementary schools about their favorite animals.
