For the last decade, students at Reedsburg Area High School have grown up alongside the kids of Hawkins, Indiana. But after the final episode of Stranger Things aired on New Year's Eve, the halls of RAHS are now filled with mixed emotions as students process the end of a favorite show.
The hit Netflix series, loosely based on the fantasy game Dungeons & Dragons, concluded its run after keeping fans on the edge of their seats for five seasons. For many students, the finale marked the end of an era.
“I was happy about it, but it was sad because it's the end,” senior Kayla Sworthout said. “Like there's no more coming to look forward to.”
Some were more enthusiastic than others when it came to the ending battle. You'll find many upon many debates online about whether it lived up to the hype or not.
"It was pretty good, overall. The ending is not as bad as everyone is saying." senior Jack Mcshane said. "The end fight was extremely cool, and I really liked how Joyce had the final say for how Henry ended up"
While the finale answered many of the questions fans have held onto for years, not everyone at RAHS was satisfied with the conclusion. Some students felt the show left behind confusing plot threads regarding beloved characters like Chief Hopper.
“Didn't Hopper fake his death at the end of Season 3? Why did the town just let him back in with no further questions asked?” senior Dustin Bell said. “His ‘death’ was in their newspaper and everything.”
A New Beginning?
While the saga of Eleven and the party has officially closed, the Stranger Things universe isn’t going dark forever. The Duffer Brothers have confirmed a live-action spin-off is in development, though they warn fans not to expect a direct sequel.
"It's very fresh and very new, but yes, it will answer some of the loose threads that are remaining," the Duffer Brothers said in a recent interview.
Unlike the original series, this new project likely won't rely on the familiar faces of the Wheeler or Byers families. The creators have emphasized that they want to explore "a completely different mythology" rather than retreading old ground.
Reporter’s Review: A Solid 6/10
If I were to give Season 5 an overall rating compared to the incredible run of previous seasons, it would be a solid 6/10.
While the emotional beats landed, the pacing felt different from the Stranger Things we fell in love with. The "plot holes" mentioned by students like Dustin made it hard to fully suspend disbelief. It was a good ending, but perhaps not the perfect one fans were dreaming of.
Stranger Things as a show overall is still personally one of my all time favorite shows. It's a special kind of show both the actors and the fans grow up with and one that will never be forgotten.
