The SL course focuses on Twentieth Century Global History topics, including: Paths to World War II in Asia and Europe, the Cold War and post-Cold War experience in the US, USSR, China, and Europe. Additional topics include the study of non-democratic, authoritarian rule in the USSR, China, and Germany. An important and valuable college-prep feature of the course is the Internal Assessment, a research component that provides students the opportunity to investigate a historical question of their choosing. Students learn to evaluate a range of evidence and perspectives and to effectively summarize their findings in a research report.
The HL course adds new topics, including post-World War II Western, Central, and Eastern Europe and includes "revision" (an IB term) for additional depth in the SL topics and the IA, which can include additional sources and revision of the SL Internal Assessment or investigation of a new IA topic--again, student's choice.
This class emphasizes development of effective individual learning and practice as well as whole class and small group collaboration. Class begins with students asking questions and working on various approaches to understanding historical topics. Students are encouraged to participate in lively classroom discussions and to very frequently work together on class objectives.
Homework is introduced, and some time is allotted to keep time outside of class to a minimum. Most of the IA can be completed on class time.
Working with intellectually curious students who are enthusiastic about contributing to a dynamic learning environment.
