TREE OF LIFE PROJECT

STEP 1: DO SOME RESEARCH ABOUT THE TREE OF LIFE LINK use multiple sources... note that the "TREE OF LIFE" is a part of many different cultures, countries and religons and has many different meaning. (some are shown below)

Iran Tree of Life

NORSE TREE OF LIFE

Azerbaijan Tree of Life

STEP 2

FIND TWO very interesting (to you) examples of the TREE OF LIFE.  Describe these examples (location, myth, story, history, etc.) and attach an image/example.

STEP 3: Of the two interesting examples... PICK ONE that is VERY INTERESTING to YOU and you think you could create a 3-Dimensional Sculpture of this.  Sketch 2-4 thumbnails for your tree.  List out needed materials, dimensions, etc.  YES! you can search the internet for artwork/examples/ideas (pinterest)

For example: I love the North American Iroquois "World on the Turtle's Back" story.. this is one that I would want to sketch and re-create.

THINGS TO CONSIDER: SIZE/Dimension, How it will stand/be displayed, what will make YOUR tree special?

I would sculpt my turtle in plaster and then use the plaster strips and paper straws for the trees.

TREE OF LIFE WITH PAPER STRAWS--SUGGESTED MATERIAL

I would keep my turtle a neutral color and then paint the tree.  I would possibly incorporate holes in the turtle to plant a small plant that looks tree- like.

CLAY as a MATERIAL/MEDIA

STEP 4:  Think about your ARTISTIC INTENTION--what are YOU trying to say/share as an artist.

FOR EXAMPLE, since I am using the IROQUOIS MYTH... "The World on the Turtle's Back".... (According to the myth, it is found in the heavens, where the first humans lived, until a pregnant woman fell and landed in an endless sea. Saved by a giant turtle from drowning, she formed the world on its back by planting bark taken from the tree.)... I would include the woman that fell. I would sculpt her from clay and I would make her similar in my size and include two young children with her to represent myself and my kids-- as an artist I would consider how I am building a world for my own children to thrive and grow.

STEP 5: Submit the above

and then talk with Mrs. Lengyel about your plan of action in order to ensure you have the correct materials to make your sculpture

THINK BIG!
