What is the central idea of your concentration? (500 characters maximum)

My concentration is about the beauty of the art of dance. As a dancer, I have been exposed to the intensity and beauty of dance. Throughout my experiences I have learned about the technique and depth that is behind every movement. As an audience member watching, you cannot always see all of the intense moments that make up the piece as a whole. In these 12 pieces here, you can see the beautiful, abstract and sharp moments in time.

How does the work in your concentration demonstrate the exploration of your idea? You may refer to specific images as examples. When referencing specific images, please indicate the image numbers. (1350 characters maximum)

My work demonstrates beauty and technique. #1 has balance with the two shoes and texture. #2 has emphasis on her pale feet against the dark floor and black legs. #3 experiments with mirrors. The dark lighting shows figure/ground relationship. #4 shows the sharp edges to her body and the contrast of her skin and dark clothing catches your eye. #5 has the white wall against her black clothes to highlight posture and form. The thin lines lead your eye to the focal points. #6 has a orange hue because it connects the dancer with the room, making everything one color to show unity. #7 displays the partner work that is involved, where two people need to work together to make one magical moment come together. #8 focuses on the instant seconds. I used photoshop to capture multiple moments in one 2-D surface. #9 uses high contrast studio lighting to show the texture of the shoes. The lights and shadows have rhythm. #10 has strong contrast and short depth of field. The emphasis on her white arms shows figure/ground relation. #11 shows the depth of a single second. The image in black and white because it emphasizes the depth and shadows. The black lines outline the lines of her body and lead your eye around. #12 uses rule of thirds to show the focal point and figure/ground relation with the girl and the floor in the background.

Hannah's Breadth

For the Breadth section of the AP® Studio Art portfolio, students submit a variety of works that demonstrate their mastery of drawing, or their understanding of principles of two- or three-dimensional design.
