Week 4
September 8-12
September 8-12
Hello B1 Families,
Thank you all for taking the time last week to attend Back to School Night. I enjoyed meeting so many families and having the opportunity to share what we will be doing this school year. If you were not able to attend and have questions for me about information that you received please contact me via email and I can help answer any questions that you have.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Daily 20 Reading Log: Students will begin reading a "just-right" book for 20 minutes each night. The book your child picks must be at an independent reading level. The goal is for students to read a chapter book. It is your child's responsibility to complete this log each day. Please sign this folder and send it back to the classroom every Friday.
Weekly Folder: Your student will come home every Monday (or first instructional day of the week) with a RED WEEKLY FOLDER. This folder will include dated pages with information about any missing assignments or behaviors we are working on at school. A parent/grown-up signature is required. Students will return the folder the next school day, unless absent. Red folders are being sent home this week. I look forward to seeing all signed Red Weekly Folders returned Tuesday, September 9th.
Picture Day: Picture Day is coming! Save the date: Monday, September 15th.
OUR WEEK AT A GLANCE
Math: On Wednesday, students will have their first math test. This test will cover lessons 2-9. I will review these lessons in class on Tuesday. Your child will come home on Tuesday night with a completed study guide. Please assist them with reviewing the problems on the study guide. Studying is their homework Tuesday evening. This may look something like asking problems verbally, writing similar problems down on a new paper, or covering up the answers and redoing the problem. The assessment given will be very similar to the study guide.
Reader's Workshop: We will begin our Benchmark curriculum Unit 1: Government for the People. Our focus will be answering the essential question: Why do people participate in government?
Writer's Workshop: Students will finish their first narrative titled My Summer. Also, students will learn how to write a well-constructed, 5 sentence paragraph. Students will be writing complete sentences using correct capitalization, spelling and punctuation. They will learn how to write a topic sentence, supporting details and a concluding sentence.
Science: Students will receive their Investigation Notebooks and learn some of the ways that scientists use notebooks. Then, students review the unit’s reference book, Handbook of Traits, which they will be using throughout the unit.
Social Studies: This week, students will continue with Week 3 in our Studies Weekly curriculum. This week we will learn about examining evidence and communicating conclusions. They will examine how to find, interpret and present information.
P.E.: Please dress appropriately on Monday for P.E. every week.
