School of Business and Information Technology Student Spotlight:
Amit Ghosh
Amit Ghosh earned his bachelor’s degree in 2006, and promptly began working for an IT consulting firm even though his degree was not computer-science related. Amit’s family encouraged him to continue his education, but he didn’t think he would be able to continue his studies due to his work schedule. However, once online schooling became more widely available, he began to research online programs that would fit his needs. When Amit found Purdue University Global, he was surprised to find that there was an accredited institution that offered numerous online programs which fit his needs. As a bonus, while researching he found that Purdue Global also had high reviews at a great value. Amit started a graduate program in Project Management but began to realize that his skill set, and interests, were better suited for IT. Thankfully, he received great help from his Purdue Global student advisor. As an added bonus, his advisor was able to help him transfer credits from his previous job experience towards his degree.
Amit found great value in Purdue Global’s resources such as the library and labs which gave him beneficial information not only for school, but for real life applications as well. He valued the help he received from the School of Business and Information Technology professors including Deanne Larson and Matthew North who he found to be highly communicative, helpful, and friendly. Although Amit has been working in the IT field for 15 years, he felt his knowledge of the field was never up to his personal standard until finishing his masters program at Purdue Global. Amit summed up his experience as Purdue Global by saying, “I’m grateful and thankful for Purdue University Global for making my experience enjoyable. It wasn’t easy to work and do school at the same time. It was difficult, but the school made my experience awesome. I wasn’t expecting it to be so enjoyable and I am thankful for that!”

Purdue Global Students Compete!
The CyberForce Competition was held Friday, November 4, 2022 and Saturday, November 5, 2022. The Department of Energy (DOE), through the CyberForce Competition™, has worked to increase hands-on cyber education, awareness of the critical infrastructure, and a basic understanding of cybersecurity within a real-world scenario. The competition is unique as it uses critical infrastructure focused scenarios with very realistic components. The scenarios used in the competition have an energy focus and look at real-world constraints and lifelike anomalies such as the lack of budget, system’s specifications, and permission controls necessary to address the situation. The competition requires students to apply their own defense techniques to protect the organization’s assets. Participants are scored based on the effectiveness and innovation of their chosen strategies. The event is also structured such that the teams must not only secure the environment, but also maintain its normal daily operations and functions for the users.
The Purdue Global team was formed with several graduate and undergraduate students to include Jacob Mack, Stephen Paull, Matthew Davis, Jacob Calleon, Margaret Medina and a few others who were supporting the team behind the scenes. The team performance was scored from many different perspectives and the team performed well in several categories. For example, the blue team scoring, which measures the team’s ability to keep services active, was quite good, with the team earning more than 1500 points of an available score of 2000. This activity simulates what is expected of a security professional in the workplace; to keep the business functioning and doing so in a secure manner. One other example of the scoring system was the required C-Suite Panel Brief in which the team had to present a video summary of the tasks performed. This was also scored and indicated the team had a very strong technical understanding overall.
This Cyberforce event is just one example of the opportunities available for students who are excited and ready to put their skills to the test in a ‘real’ simulated environment. Students who participate in these events are also observed by hiring managers from industry and government entities as they shop for the best talent. If you have not participated in any of the competitions yet, please join our student association, DATA and learn more about the activities and spaces for connecting.
