Memorizing God's Word
“Your Word have I hid in my heart,
that I might not sin against you.”
Psalm 119:11
Why should I memorize God's Word?
God's Word is good for a great many things: for meditation, contemplation, keep us from sinning, protection, offense in battle, peace.
"All scripture is given by inspiration of God,
and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction,
for instruction in righteousness:
That the man of God may be perfect,
thoroughly furnished to all good works."
2 Timonth 3:16-17
We will not always have your Bible right in front of us to look up the proper verse right when we need it. Having the Word stored in your heart and mind is the best place for safe-keeping.
"Your Word I have hid in my heart, that I might not sin against You."
Psalm 119:11
When should we think and speak about the Word of God?
"Teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house,
and when you walk, when you lie down, and when you rise up."
Deuteronomy 11:19
The Word of God is Jesus in the flesh. That is why the Word is so powerful. Memorization of God’s Word is one of our most powerful spiritual weapons (in addition to prayer and fasting, in my humble opinion). I think things would have turned out much different for Eve if she knew God's Word and spoke it to the serpent in response to the temptation. In the Garden of Eden, the devil promised Adam and Eve that if they ate from the Tree of Knowledge, they would be like gods: discerning the difference between good and evil. Of course the devil was deceiving Adam and Eve by not telling the whole truth. If only Eve would have said instead: "It is written (Leviticus 20:22) You shall therefore keep all my statutes, and all my judgments, and do them: that the land, where you dwell, will not spit you out." Adam and Eve could have avoided the sin that cast them out of Eden and cursed mankind to labor and pain. If Eve would have had to say, wait a minute, serpent. I must look up an appropriate verse on my phone to respond. Well, you can surmise that not memorizing the Word of God is just as ineffective as not even knowing the Word of God.
We must know the Word of God “by heart” so that in the moment we are told something, we are able to test that something against the Word of God. We must often make a critical decision in the moment if that something is beneficial or deadly. Jesus illustrates this perfectly.
"Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit
into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights,
he was afterward hungry.
And when the tempter came to him, he said,
If you be the Son of God,
command that these stones be made bread.
But he answered and said,
It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.
Then the devil took him up into the holy city,
and set him on a pinnacle of the temple,
And said to him, If you be the Son of God, cast yourself down:
for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning you:
and in their hands they shall bear you up,
so you will not dash your foot against a stone.
Jesus said to him, It is written again,
You shalt not tempt the Lord your God.
Again, the devil take him up into an exceeding high mountain,
and show him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
And saith unto him, All these things will I give you,
if you will fall down and worship me.
Then say Jesus unto him, Get you behind me, Satan:
for it is written, You shall worship the Lord your God,
and him only shall you serve.
Then the devil left him, and,
behold, angels came and ministered to him."
Matthew 4:1-11

Walking the Walk:
Walking with God ~ Memorizing God’s Word
Think about what moved you in this section. Or perhaps something you learned or want to know more about. What are some practical things you can ask God for in your prayers to Him?
Possible things to pray for (in case you need ideas!).
- Ask God for help in memorizing scriptures
- Ask God for help in finding more time to read and study the Word
- Ask God to help me on my path to righteousness
- Ask God for protection
- Ask God to send Angels to minister to me
- Ask God for Strength to keep asking God if He doesn’t answer or confirm right away
- Ask God for Patience to do NOTHING if God doesn’t answer right away
- Ask God for Wisdom to ask God to take gentle care of you, as he will do nothing unless we ask
Note of caution: don’t pray for these opportunities all at once. Going slow is recommended, especially if you are healing from a hurt. In this case, ask God to take it slow with the opportunities, so you can ramp up to the one he created you to be, in such a time as this.
