Holy Communion
"This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me. Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you."
Luke 22:18-20
What is Eucharist or Holy Communion?
The Holy Communion represents a renewed commitment as a disciple of Christ, to dying to my own needs, and living in God’s will for my life. Communion is the physical act of confirming Christ's New Covenant, in which Christ took our sins upon Himself in sacrifice so that we may be made righteous through Him.
The bread represents Christ’s body wounded for our transgressions that we might be healed through His sacrifice.
"But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities:
the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed."
Isaiah 53:5
The wine or grape juice represents Christ’s blood He shed on the cross to cleanse us of our unrighteousness.
"The blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin."
1 John 1:7
Purpose of Holy Communion?
The Eucharist honors Christ’s sacrifice and nourishes the soul, offering strength, renewal, and guidance. Holy Communion is more than a symbol— it is a living sign of God’s constant presence, bringing comfort, courage, and hope to all who receive it.
The physical act of this spiritual sustenance fosters an intimate spiritual connection between the believer and his Creator. Receiving the Eucharist is a step towards deepening love and devotion for Jesus Christ. By reflecting on Christ’s love and sacrifice, our soul grows in gratitude, faith, and dedication.
Communion becomes not just a ritual but a transformative experience that shapes the heart, strengthens the spirit, and motivates the believer to embody Christ’s teachings through love, service, and humble obedience. As part of the Christian church, we have now become the body of Christ.
"Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it."
1 Corinthians 12:27
How often should we take part in Holy Communion?
As often as we can. Communion fosters a life of reflection and action.
"For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come."
1 Corin 11:26
What are the Benefits of Holy Communion?
Spiritual growth is a lifelong journey, and Communion provides essential spiritual sustenance to progress faithfully. Through the Body and Blood of Christ, believers renew their deep, personal relationship with God, receiving His grace, love, and mercy afresh.
What must I do to take communion?
“Prepare your heart to receive the Lord; let your soul rejoice in His presence.”
Psalm 119:11
"Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord,
unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord."
1 Corin 11:27
How do I be made worthy of taking communion?
A believer needs to examine himself, judging himself, finding any inquities, and seeking forgiveness and repentance for those iniquities.
"But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup."
1 Corin 11:28
What does it mean to examine myself?
“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.”
Psalm 51:10
It means to examine your heart, find any sin, and seek forgiveness for that sin. Click here for Freedom from Spiritual Debt for step by step on how to be free of sin.
What if I take communion without examining myself first?
"For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself,
not discerning the Lord's body. For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.
For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. But when we are judged,
we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world."
1 Corin 11:29-32
Communion Prayers
"Purify my mind, cleanse my soul, and help me focus entirely on Your presence.
May Your grace strengthen my faith, guide my actions, and fill me with love and devotion.
Let this be a confirmation of your new covenant with me, through the sacrifice and blood of your Holy son. I do this in remembrance of Jesus’ love and sacrifice. Amen." [Take the Bread. Drink the wine.]
"Heavenly Father, Thank you for the gift of Your son, for His sacrifice, and for Your love that sustains my soul. Forgive my sins as I forgive the sins of others. I repent and turn away from my sins.
Let this bread represent Christ’s body that was wounded for my transgressions,
that I might be healed and saved through Christ's sacrifice. [Take the bread.]
Let this wine (or grape juice) represent Christ’s blood shed on the cross,
to cleanse me of my unrighteousness. I am washed clean in Christ's blood. [Drink the wine.]"
"And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer:
For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.
And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves:
For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come.
And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying,
This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.
Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you."
Luke 22:15-20

Think about what moved you in this section. Or perhaps something you learned or want to know more about. What are some practical things you can ask God for in your prayers to Him?
Possible things to pray for (in case you need ideas!).
- Guidance on what to pray for
- Wisdom to ask God to take gentle care of me, as he will do nothing unless we ask
Note of caution: don’t pray for these opportunities all at once. Going slow is recommended, especially if you are healing from a hurt. In this case, ask God to take it slow with the opportunities, so you can ramp up to the one he created you to be, in such a time as this.
