Emily Fox,FdSc Psychological Studies
"During lockdown in March 2020 I - like many others - wasn't able to go to work. During this period I had time to really think about what I was doing and where my career was heading. I was feeling concerned that I was being limited in just Childcare, and didn't want to commit to this field forever.
This made me start looking at my options, which is when I started looking at Degree courses offered at Petroc. I didn't want to continue with a specific child-related qualification, and that's when I started looking into the Psychological Studies Degree. It sounded interesting, and something I could really enjoy as well as giving me more experience and knowledge.
I chose to do a degree at Petroc for a number of reasons; it costs less to do a degree here than at Universities, and I didn't want to leave home and deal with a new city as well as a new course, that would have been too much for me personally. I love where I live and didn't want to move, this way I can study for my degree with the support I need around me - and I don't have to leave my dog!
Once I had decided on my course, the rest was easy. The application was easy to complete and my interview took place over the phone - I was enrolled within within two weeks!
Once I was enrolled, I was given information and resources to prepare me for September. We had zoom sessions providing us with anything we needed to know including an understanding of our programmes and the expectations for the first year. It made me feel prepared and ready.
I attended the first day in person and we were provided with a bi-weekly timetable; basically attending one week in person then the next online - this went really well, but actually, due to there being no more than 16 of us on our course, we attend in person in the lecture theatre for all but one of the classes. This actually suits me better as I enjoy learning in this environment.
Attending Petroc college during the pandemic has not been an issue for me; the college feels safe and everything is being done to ensure we are ok.
I only attend 1.5 days a week which gives me plenty of time for degree work at home as well as having a part-time job.
I have found I need to do approximately 15 hours of college work - give or take - per week.
It is never too late to enjoy learning new things, and I feel like this has opened up a really exciting world I had never even considered before starting my degree."

"I was given the opportunity by my employer to further my education, Petroc was the obvious choice as it is situated not far from my place of work.
As a design engineer at work, I wanted to study a course that I would not only enjoy and find interesting but would be relevant to my day to day tasks as an engineer.
The courses I studied at Petroc covered a broad range of subjects, the variety of modules gave me the opportunity to learn so much that essentially made me a better engineer. I found I was taking what I had learnt at Petroc and using it at work!
The lectures at Petroc are not only very knowledgeable but are supportive and approachable."
Petroc is launching a range of courses that are available to start in January or February 2021.
We understand that COVID-19 has caused a great deal of uncertainty amongst people considering starting a qualification, with many deciding to delay their studies. We are therefore pleased to be able to offer additional start dates for a wide range of programmes including degrees, part-time adult courses, apprenticeships and full-time courses for school-leavers.
We have been working hard to ensure our students receive a safe, enjoyable and rewarding learning experience so that you can study with peace of mind.

Our Foundation Degrees, delivered in partnership with the University of Plymouth, are equivalent to studying for the first two years of an Honours Degree at university. They are designed in collaboration with employers and offer you the opportunity to combine academic study with the skills and attributes needed in the workplace.
When studied full-time, foundation degrees are two-year courses. Many of our courses are also offered on a part-time basis (usually three years), which can provide greater flexibility and the opportunity to carry on with work while you study. Some employers fund student fees and provide time to study where the course is considered of relevance to their business.
Petroc’s foundation degree courses are designed with built-in progression routes to Honours Degrees at the University of Plymouth and other institutions, including Petroc.

An apprenticeship is a job with an accompanying skills development programme which has been designed by employers in the sector. It allows you to gain technical knowledge and real practical experience, along with functional and personal skills required for your immediate job and future career. The required knowledge and skills are acquired through a mixture of learning in the workplace and off-the-job training.
Higher and degree apprenticeships are available at Petroc at Levels 4 and 5. They combine work with study and may include a work-based, academic or combined qualification relevant to the industry. Levels 4 and 5 are equivalent to a HNC/Diploma or a Foundation Degree, Level 6 is equivalent to a Bachelor’s Degree and Level 7 is equivalent to a Master’s Degree. Higher and degree apprenticeships were introduced to provide employers with the high-level skills most critical for growth.
