Students on our Applied Science course receive an excellent grounding for future science-based careers. You will study a combination of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, along with units in Laboratory Skills and Scientific Research.
Watch this video from our Maths & Science lecturers, Mark Rivers, Elizabeth Garnett, Dave Waters, Debbie Bunker and Catherine Williams, to hear all about the Applied Science course on offer at Petroc.
"I chose to study at Petroc because it offered the course I wanted to do and also offered a change of environment - instead of staying at the sixth form at my old school.
I’ve always been interested in science - and have a passion for all three of the sciences - so this course was perfect for me. It is also a great alternative to A-levels as it is mostly coursework-based.
The microbiology unit has been my favourite project so far. Carrying out aseptic techniques when growing our own bacteria is what I would potentially like to do in the future.
I like the freedom we get at Petroc and the fact we get treated like adults and that I have more responsibility for my learning - which makes me want to work harder so I can achieve the grades I want.
After college, I hope to go to university to study biomedicine or pharmacology.
If you want to study science, be prepared for hard work as it very different from school, make sure it’s the right choice for you, and make sure you enjoy science - as this could be your career in the future."
