CHEMISTRY

Welcome to Chemistry

Prestigious careers like medicine, veterinary science and pharmacy all require a sound knowledge of Chemistry. Building on topics you will have covered at GCSE, you will progress onto new territories such as spectroscopy and the transition metals.

“I have been interested in Astrophysics for as long as I can remember, and was able to do it as an extra curricular subject at school. This swayed my decision in what a subjects to do at Petroc, these being Maths, Physics and Chemistry, as I knew I needed these subjects to go on and do Astrophysics at University.

All the subjects I chose had certain parts that I really enjoyed. All my teachers were very good and really supportive.

I have been accepted at my chosen University, Warwick, doing a Masters in Astrophysics. I am particularly interested in the theoretical side of the course, and the science of pushing astrophysics forward.

Following my Masters, I plan on doing a PHD and then go into research work.”

ETHAN, A-LEVEL CHEMISTRY AND MATHEMATICS AND PHYSICS

"I initially decided on chemistry because it opens up numerous opportunities into different career paths from medicine and engineering to forensics and pharmaceuticals. It is highly regarded by universities and a very relevant subject to study today. Although it may be challenging, I genuinely believe it’s certainly worth the time and effort.

So far in chemistry, we have covered a range of fascinating topics, some expanding on GCSE knowledge and some entirely new concepts. My current studies of Organic Chemistry (alkanes and alkenes and more) has proved to be particularly interesting.

Part of what makes chemistry so engaging for me is the many practicals we carry out. There are fume cabinets which are a type of ventilation device designed to limit exposure to hazardous chemicals. The large number of which enables us to conduct practicals both efficiently and effectively. Furthermore, something you’ll notice right away is that the staff are all super friendly and easy to talk to so if you’re ever in doubt, don't hesitate to ask for help including to your tutor who you can address any issues or concerns with."
