HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE

Welcome to Health & Social Care

Our Health and Social Care programmes teach vital skills such as teamwork, communication and research which help you to liaise with individuals in care as well as parents and guardians and care providers.

Good work experience is imperative for gaining employment in this industry, and we are delighted to be able to offer students the opportunity to undertake fantastic work experience including working with local special needs schools, and helping primary age pupils with learning and/or physical difficulties with their swimming lessons.

You will also have the opportunity to visit Sweden to develop skills in team building, communication and cultural awareness, as well as carrying out work experience in a care home specialising in dementia. These outstanding opportunities, coupled with the expert knowledge provided by lecturers, will give you all the skills you need to progress into a wide range of rewarding careers or onto a degree-level programme.

Before you hear from our lecturers and take a look through the course content, why not hear what our students say!

"I didn’t have any idea on what I wanted to pursue a career in, I knew it was probably going to be health and social care related and the list of possible careers it would lead too interested me. I have always loved being around people and knowing this course would send me into a career where I can support people, whether it be children, the elderly or the general public, this interested me. I didn’t pick A levels because I don’t do well with exams/revision, so coursework, full time, and a one subject course was perfect for me.

I really enjoyed the opportunities we were given when on placements, there was a huge range of places we could go and get experience and it helped me decide which areas I preferred and which areas didn’t suit me as well. It also allowed me to gain so much confidence too, and there was always amazing support from all the lecturers, whether this was with the coursework, placement or just general life.

Everyone is friendly, helpful and the access to the general site and any support is so easy to access. Also, it is a really nice place to study, with special quiet areas where you can study and know you won’t be distracted. They have thought of everything a student would need to be able to support them to get their best potential grade"

Maisy, Health and Social Care Level 3

"At Petroc you get treated like a grown up, they teach you how to be more independent in your learning, how to manage your time and get assignments done by deadlines.

"Coming here has given me so many more learning opportunities, I have been doing work experience for the last 10 weeks at Pathfield School and I have been accepted into the 999 Academy and the Health and Care Academy which is great"

Matt, Level 3 Health and Social Care

"It is a great college with friendly and supportive staff and learners, where people actually care about others. Lecturers are really approachable, you can ask them for help and nothing is too much trouble. I would highly recommend Petroc, I love everything about it."

Rachel, Level 3 Health and Social Care

"The staff at Petroc are massively supportive. They prepare us really well for assignments, coursework and exams. They help us with online resources, practice papers, help and support in class and talk about areas we're not sure about.

The lecturers make us feel confident and prepared for the work we are doing. It's brilliant."

Marshall, Level 3 Health and Social Care

"I went to Bideford School, so coming to Petroc was a decision to try something different, experience new things rather than the same things at school. I come to Petroc by bus which is really easy, I have made loads of new friends and found the support here really amazing.

"In my first year I had to get some emotional support from the college's Student Services which was good for me. Petroc has been brilliant and I would recommend coming here to anyone."
