VISUAL ARTS
The Visual Arts department at TPS has a focus upon giving our students the freedom to explore a range of influences, techniques and media, developing intellectual and conceptual ways of thinking.
This leads to the making of personal responses through the creation of artwork that is to be appreciated primarily or solely for its imaginative, aesthetic or intellectual content. We believe that an engagement with the independent and collaborative skills required to be a successful artist provide important transferable skills in an increasingly visually diverse world.
In our subject intent, highlighted by the following points we aim to:
INSPIRE our students to be independent, inquisitive and creative thinkers through demonstration, support and freedom
DEVELOP students into game changers and autonomous learners who thrive in an environment of risk taking
GROW our students’ understanding of the world through skills-based tasks and discussions on the impact of cultural events.
NURTURE and CHALLENGE all students with schemes that encourage and support an individualised approach
PREPARE our students for the future by teaching skills and techniques with a focus on career pathways and opportunities
Our bright and spacious Art studio rooms are our main teaching spaces. In Year 7 and 8, students gain experience in various disciplines including drawing, painting, ceramics and photography.
Students can choose to continue to study Fine Art or Photography at Key Stage 4, where they will get the opportunity to go on trips and visits. Most recently, we have been to Tuscany, Italy and every year we visit London’s Tate Galleries with Year 9.

Immersing our art students in a wide range of stimulating, exciting and inspirational opportunities is central to our vision for quality art education.
KS3:
In year 7 we visit the Tate Modern gallery in London to widen our appreciation of the diverse and often visually and conceptually challenging language of art.
Art clubs are available after school, enabling our students to explore more techniques and media with others that wish to extend their skills and knowledge of the arts.
We celebrate the creative outcomes of our students by offering them the opportunity to enter work into national and international competitions. Notable successes include the Lions Club international world
KS4:
Visits to London galleries during year 9 are particularly influential for our students embarking upon their GCSE in Art and Design subjects. Year 9 and 10 students also have the opportunity to experience an overseas visit. Paris and Tuscany have provided fantastic creative and cultural experiences for our students.
Complementing our after school drop in art clinics for KS4 art students, we also deliver an extended skills masterclass to those that are keen to really push themselves.
KS4 students can enter their work into a variety of exhibitions both online and with curated exhibitions. Notable successes have been with entry into the Royal Society of British Artists student exhibition in London and the Future Artists exhibition at Chichester University.
Our annual GCSE art exhibition at TPS is always a highlight of the school calendar, with students able to share their ambitious creative outcomes with friends, family and the wider public. We are proud that the creative endeavours of our students at TPS are always hugely appreciated and never fails to impress our audiences!
