Reflection
In LLT 521: Technology for the 21st Century Educator, I created a “ Parent Information Survey." The purpose of this survey was to help me get to know my students better in the beginning of the year. It was also to help me understand what the parents are expecting their child to improve on throughout the school year. Of course, parents know their children the best, so who better to ask about each child in my class than them? I want to provide each of my students with the opportunity to grow in the areas that they need it most.
This survey is something that I have done for the past couple of years, but I have always done it through a paper and pencil version. I would send the letter home before the school year started with their supply lists and then get the paper back from the students on the first day of school. Although this has worked for me in the past, this new online survey has proven to be more efficient and convenient for the parents and myself. Using Survey Monkey to send out this parent information survey saves me a lot of time and allows me to organize the information pretty easily. I can even print out the responses if needed to keep in a student’s file.
The results from this survey, in the beginning of the school year, have really helped to drive my instruction with each student. I am now able to begin the school year knowing each child’s strengths and weaknesses. I am also able to understand how they learn best just by having their parents fill out this simple survey. It has really helped me build connections with my students right from the start of the school year. This survey will continue to be a critical part of the beginning of the school year for me, as it has changed to way I connect with my students and their families.
