Artifact: My Self-Reflection Report Card
Reflection
For substandard 6A, I chose an artifact that I do with my students every year right around conference time. I have them complete the My Self-Reflection Report Card. Within the self-reflection, students rate themselves on how they think they are doing so far this year in each of the areas listed. I always make sure to encourage the children to answer truthfully so that they really know what they have to work on for the remainder of the school year. The students also list one thing that they are really proud of so far this year and one thing that they want to work on. They are asked to set a goal for one specific thing that they want to improve on throughout the rest of the school year.
The majority of my students do a great job at rating themselves pretty truthfully. I actually find it very interesting how often their thoughts match up with mine. I also find that some times students are very hard on themselves and use this as an opportunity to praise them for how great they are doing. I want make sure that they know how proud I am of them. This is something that I also share with parents at conferences. I like the parents to see how their child thinks that they are doing in school along with what I see in the classroom. All parents seem to really love that I do this and appreciate the feedback about their child’s work habits. As I continue to complete self-reflection report cards in the future, I hope to watch them evolve by using a technology platform like Seesaw or Google Forms to complete this same activity with my students.
