How might we reflect on the language we use in the classroom and school community?
Do we use language that is asset based?
Are we using words that connect others?
Are we describing our students and families with deficit?
How much of our language that we use with students is focused on control and compliance?
How might we begin to recognize when we are using language that can damage relationships and diminish trust?
How can we support each other to create a culture where language is positive and connecting?
Something to engage with:
Be Aware of Language That Damages Relationships
Using Language That Can Support Connection and Care
Using Affective "I Statements"
Focus on feelings over facts
Affective statements are non judgemental personal expressions of feelings in response to others’ behaviors. Affective statements can be used at any time and when implemented with fidelity, can reinforce positive actions and explain feelings without assigning blame or shame.
Strategy: Observation, Feeling, Need, Request
