Awareness and Building Understanding of a Restorative Justice Culture:

• There is common understanding of why restorative justice practices are being implemented and can clearly be expressed by educators, students and families

• Educators express an understanding  of the salience of race in student discipline, in particular, the  implications of exclusionary practices

• There are signs of a shift in mindset from punitive to restorative justice

Taking Action for a Restorative Justice Culture:

• Foundational structures to support RJ are in place (Identity, circles, conflict resolution, healing spaces, affinity spaces, CRRP)

•  A team of educators, each of whom have a clearly defined role, is in place to lead and sustain restorative justice practices in the building

• This team meets consistently and has streamlined communication with the whole staff. and  are responsible for structuring professional development 

• There is a clear referral system established for both educators and students to refer individuals to the restorative process

•  Key indicators have been determined to track goals to achieve

•     Restorative language  have been introduced

• A method of collecting and analyzing data has is being developed

Grounding a Restorative Justice Culture:

•     Restorative language and culture have been established

• A method of collecting and analyzing data has been developed

• Educators know what data will be collected and how

• There are protocols for analysis of data with many perspectives

• The data is used to inform changes to the discipline system and future goals.

• Building capacity for RJE is both intensive and ongoing

• Staff  are provided with resources to help with implementation and given frequent feedback on restorative practices used in their individual classrooms by Administrators

• The restorative questions are used, not only in formal mediations, but in the hallways, classrooms and staff meetings to address conflict

• Signage in the building encourages  and reflects the use of restorative language in all settings

• School leadership uses restorative language not just with students, but with staff and families

• Staff are able to have productive conversations around race and adult behaviour’s role in adult student interactions.

Transformation of the school culture and community for a restorative justice approach :

• Families and students are well-informed of the shift to restorative justice

• Ongoing learning sessions are made available to students and families to promote understanding of the vision and use of the common language 

• Student and family voice is valued in the school ongoing SIEP process

• Proactive measures, not just responsive measures are being taken to improve school climate

• Team is not only reacting to incidents and conflicts with circles of support, they are  focusing on proactive strategies

• Educators consistently working  to proactively build relationships with all students and families
