Curatorial Note

Photography is more than an art; it is an act of remembrance, a means of preserving the ephemeral. This exhibition, "Through the Frames of Memory: Kalpana Bhatt Collection" celebrates the remarkable foresight and dedication of Kalpana Bhatt, a senior member of the Pattani family and great-granddaughter of Sir Pattani, who safeguarded her family’s visual history for future generations. It offers a glimpse into the intimate world she preserved, where each photograph is more than an image—it is a story, a connection, and a bridge across time. Kalpana Bhatt is deeply passionate about photography, but the collection she safeguarded was captured through the lenses of her father, Shashikant Pattani, her brother, Jaywant Pattani, her husband, Mahendra Bhatt, other family members, and professional photographers. The photographs, spanning generations, document personal and social milestones—from weddings and gatherings to everyday moments. Through her meticulous documentation, Kalpana ben ensured that names, places, and memories were not lost. 

Understanding the fragile nature of photographic materials, Kalpana ben made the conscious decision to donate her extensive collection—including photographs, negatives, and her camera—to the Pattani Archives, set up in 2021 in Bhavnagar. She trusted that the institution would provide the necessary care and expertise to preserve them for future generations, ensuring their longevity beyond personal possession. 

As part of the Constructing Personal Archives (CPA) exercise, we conducted an oral history interview with Kalpanaben, gathering her memories and insights. Her stories provided crucial context, helping us understand the significance of each image, but also the context in which they were taken. This was followed by an ongoing cataloging process, documentation, and research to piece together a narrative from these photographs.

From these efforts emerged a photography exhibition, bringing these materials to the public domain. This exhibition, is not just about looking at photographs; it is about recognizing the importance of personal archives, understanding their role in history, and appreciating the people who preserve them. Through this, we hope to inspire others to value and document their own family histories, ensuring they are not forgotten.

ફોટોગ્રાફી માત્ર એક કલા નથી; એક યાદગીરી છે, અલૌકિકને જીવંત રાખવાનો પ્રયત્ન છે. આ પ્રદર્શન તસ્વીરોમાં કેદ કથાઓ: કલ્પના ભટ્ટ કલેક્શન એક ઉત્સવ છે, કલ્પના ભટ્ટની દૂરંદેશી અને સમર્પણને આપની સમક્ષ લાવવાનો. તેઓ પટ્ટણી પરિવારના વડીલ સભ્ય છે અને સર પ્રભાશંકર પટ્ટણીના પ્રપૌત્રી છે. જેમણે ભવિષ્યની પેઢી માટે, પરિવારની આવી સુંદર છબીના ઇતિહાસનો સંગ્રહ કર્યો છે. એમના સંગ્રહની તસવીરો, માત્ર છબીઓ નથી - એક કથા છે, જે ભૂતકાળને વર્તમાન સાથે જોડે છે. ફોટોગ્રાફી પ્રત્યે કલ્પના ભટ્ટને અત્યંત લગાવ હંમેશા રહ્યો છે, પણ જે સંગ્રહ અત્રે પ્રદર્શિત છે તેની તસવીરો તેઓના પિતા શશીકાંત પટ્ટણી  તેમના ભાઈ જયવંત પટ્ટણી, તેમના પતિ મહેન્દ્ર ભટ્ટ, પરિવારના અન્ય સભ્યો તથા વ્યવસાયી ફોટોગ્રાફર દ્વારા લેવાઈ છે. આ તસવીરો દ્વારા, પેઢીઓના વ્યક્તિગત અને સામાજિક ઘટનાક્રમો જેવા કે લગ્ન, મેળાવડા અને રોજિંદી ઘટનાઓને ઉજાગર કરવામાં આવી છે. કલ્પનાબેનના ઝીણવટભર્યા સંગ્રહથી એ ચોક્કસ નોંધી શકાય છે કે નામ, જગ્યાઓ અને તેમની સાથે જોડાયેલી યાદો વ્યવસ્થિત રીતે સચવાઈ છે.

ફોટોગ્રાફી સાથે સંકળાયેલી વસ્તુઓ નાજુક હોય છે અને આ સારી રીતે જાણતા કલ્પનાબેને પોતાના અનોખા સંગ્રહને પટ્ટણી આર્કાઇવ્સને દાન કરી દેવાનો નિર્ણય લીધો. ફોટોગ્રાફ, નેગેટિવ તથા તેમનો  કેમેરા પણ આર્કાઇવ્સને તેમણે આપ્યો અને  2021 માં ભાવનગરમાં પટ્ટણી આર્કાઇવ્સ  શરુ થયું. તેમને એ ખાતરી હતી કે સંસ્થા આ વસ્તુઓની જાળવણી કરશે અને તેમની વ્યક્તિગત માલિકીની વસ્તુઓને તેમના થી પણ વધુ ધ્યાન થી જાળવશે. આર્કાઇવ્સની જાળવણી થી આ તસવીરોમાં કેદ ક્ષણો ભૂતકાળ, વર્તમાન અને ભવિષ્યને જોડતી કડી બની રહેશે. 

પટ્ટણી આર્કાઇવ્ઝના માધ્યમથી કન્સ્ટ્રક્ટિંગ પર્સનલ આર્કાઇવ્ઝ (CPA) પ્રોજેક્ટના ભાગ રૂપે, અમે કલ્પનાબેન સાથે મૌખિક ઇતિહાસ ઇન્ટરવ્યૂ લીધો, આ ઇન્ટરવ્યૂમાં તેમની યાદો, સ્મૃતિ અને આંતરદૃષ્ટિ એકત્રિત કરી તથા તેમણે કહેલી વાર્તાઓએ મહત્વપૂર્ણ સંદર્ભ પૂરો પાડ્યો, જે અમને દરેક છબીના મહત્વને સમજવામાં મદદ કરે છે, ત્યારપછી આ બધી છબીઓમાંથી ધણી વાર્તાને એકસાથે એકત્રિત કરવા માટે દસ્તાવેજીકરણ અને સંશોધન કરવામાં આવ્યું.

આ પ્રયાસોમાંથી એક ફોટોગ્રાફી પ્રદર્શન ઉભરી આવ્યું, જે આ ફોટોગ્રાફી સામગ્રીને લોકોની વચ્ચે લાવે છે. આ પ્રદર્શન ફક્ત ફોટોગ્રાફ્સ જોવા વિશે નથી; તે વ્યક્તિગત આર્કાઇવ્સના મહત્વને ઓળખવા, ઇતિહાસમાં તેમની ભૂમિકાને સમજવા અને તેમને સાચવનારા લોકોની પ્રશંસા કરવા વિશે છે. તથા અમે અન્ય લોકોને તેમના પોતાના કૌટુંબિક ઇતિહાસનું મૂલ્ય અને દસ્તાવેજીકરણ કરવા માટે પ્રેરણા આપવાની આશા રાખીએ છીએ, ખાતરી કરીએ છીએ કે તેઓ ભૂલી ન જાય આભાર....
