I met Dr. Yutaka Naitoh for the first time when he was in Dr. Richard Allen's laboratory of the University of Hawaii soon after he retired from the Tsukuba University. Apparently, his collaboration with Richard was very successful as they renewed NSF grants (usually 3 years) three times (?). His wife Toshiko-san came to Hawaii 2-3 times year to meet him. They were a really nice couple and my wife and I had very nice time with them.
Once he and I went to Bodega Bay on the west coast of California. I asked him to go there with me to watch the movement of herring (fish) spermatozoa around the egg. I wanted to hear from him what he thinks of sperm movement as an expert of Paramecium's movement. When we had free time, we drove along the Pacific coast and to Sonoma (winery) county. Near Bodega Bay there is an interesting (to me) place called "Osmosis-Enzyme-Bath ( see Photos). I always wanted to try it and asked Yutaka-san if we should try this. To my surprise, he refused it, which I still do not understand. So, I missed the chance to try the Osmosis Bath. Can any of you explain to me why he refused it? Anyway, Naitoh-san was a wonderful person. We all miss him very much.
