As a young scientist from Norway, I was thrilled by the situation to collaborate with the experts on Paramecium. In Richard’s lab in Honolulu I spend the year 2000-2001 exploring the contractile vacuole together with Yutaka. His kindly guidance with humor and enthusiasm will always be remembered and he is a role model in my own student guidance.
It was inspiring to elaborate on the membrane dynamic of Paramecium with the people in the lab. However, I particularly remember the Friday evenings at campus bar, we were drinking a beer or two, discussing the similarities and differences between the Japanese, German, American, and Norwegian society. These conversations, often with our respective present, gave me perspectives I always want to bring with me.
