We are excited to share with you the amazing scientific journey that Year 6 students have undertaken over the past several weeks. Through ten captivating sessions, they have delved into the captivating world of animals, including humans, exploring various body systems, healthy living habits, and the wonders of scientific investigation.
Every Thursday afternoon, students from St Phillip Howard eagerly made their way to class, ready to uncover the mysteries of the human body and the animal kingdom. Led by our dedicated Science teachers (Mrs. Morgan and Mr. Dunlop), the sessions were designed to align with the Age Related Expectations for Year 6, ensuring that our students not only gained knowledge but also developed essential scientific skills.
Throughout the programme, students revisited and built upon their prior learning from primary school, reinforcing their understanding of essential body systems. From the skeletal system to the respiratory system, from classifying animals and plants to understanding the importance of healthy eating, our students explored a wide range of topics, fostering a holistic understanding of biology and health.
One of the highlights of the program was the hands-on activities that brought science to life. Students eagerly engaged in experiments, from modelling blood components using polymer beads to dissecting hearts and observing the connection between the heart and lungs. They investigated their own heart and pulse rates, explored the effects of caffeine and exercise on heart rate, and discussed the impact of lifestyle and dietary choices on health.
Not only did the students learn about the intricacies of the human body, but they also honed their scientific skills. They practiced working scientifically, learning about variables, using scientific equipment, measuring and interpreting data, and presenting their findings—a valuable experience that will serve them well in their future scientific endeavors.
While the sessions were designed to cover a broad curriculum, they were also tailored to the unique needs and abilities of our incoming students. Extension opportunities were provided to those who were ready for them, ensuring that every student was appropriately challenged and supported in their learning journey.
