We offer computer science sessions to our local feeder primary schools. In January, we invited Year 6 students from Oak View Primary School for a few sessions on spreadsheets. The students enjoyed entering data, using formatting techniques, and constructing formulas. Our Computer Science leaders in KS3 led the session with the aim of improving their confidence, motivation, and progress in computer science.
In February, we worked with Year 5 students from Birchwood Avenue Primary School to support them in developing their programming skills. The students created various games in an application called Scratch and learned programming constructs such as sequence, selection, and iteration. Upskilling students in primary school will benefit them when they transition to secondary school as they will be ready to code in a high-level language.
The Science Faculty has offered a range of workshops to upskill Year 6 students from St. Phillip Howard Primary School. Mrs. Morgan, Head of Science, and Mr. Dunlop, teacher of Science, have been providing fantastic experiences of practical science learning.
We have plans to work with our other feeder schools after half-term and in the Summer term.
In January, we hosted a meeting for KS2 teachers and Heads of Faculties to discuss the topics taught, Year 6 students' skills and knowledge, and what we expect from a Year 7 student. These meaningful conversations will help teachers plan to support and challenge students.
We will invite Year 6 students, who have been allocated Onslow as their secondary school, and their parents to our Friendship Event. The Friendship Event is scheduled for March 26th from 3:45 pm to 5:00 pm. Students can experience a subject taster session such as Food Technology, French, or PE.
