Secret Shapes
Introduction
You will be building different 3D shapes with multi-link cubes today. How would you present this on paper in a 3-dimensional way? What about a 2-dimensional way?
Use 4 to 5 cubes to build any random shape.
To present 3-dimensional shape accurately, draw this on isometric paper either on a hard copy (PRINT ME) or on Desmos.
An example of a drawing on isometric paper is on the right.
Look at this video to learn how to do this.
To present this in a 2-dimensional way, draw it's:
Plan (a.k.a top/ bird's-eye view)
Front elevation
Side elevations (left and/or right)
An example is on the right, note that only the right elevation is given.
If you are convinced that your drawings are correct. Build the shape on NCTM Isometric Drawing Tool or mathspad to check.
Once you have checked that your drawings are correct, take pictures or a video recording of it.
Share your plans and elevations with your partner to see if they can reproduce the shape.
Break up your own shapes and use those cubes to build the shape from your partner.
Check each other's work to make sure you are able to successfully build each other's shape.
Repeat steps 1 to 8 with more multi-link cubes.
Create a poster of 3D shapes, isometric drawing and plans and elevations.
Further Practice
Some of the essential skills introduced in this lesson are "drawing on isometric paper" and "plans and elevations". The relevant skills can be found on DrFrostMaths, CorbettMaths, MyiMaths and Eedi. Watch any video and/or go through any online lesson as you see fit.
Transum
Plans and Elevations - recognise, visualise and interpret plans and elevations of three dimensional shapes.
Drawing 3D Objects - draw two-dimensional representations of three-dimensional objects.
