Rangolis
Introduction
Take a look at the beautiful pattern on the right, how many line and rotational symmetries are there?
Do you know what it is?
It is called a Rangoli. During Diwali, Hindus draw bright Rangoli patterns on the floor by the front door to encourage the goddess Lakshmi to enter their homes. To learn more about the importance and significance of Rangoli, look at this video.
In today's lesson, you will create different rangoli patterns.
Either use this dotted paper template (PRINT ME) or use this online version.
Draw a 10 x 10 grid on dotted paper (this will use 11 dots on each of the sides).
Split the square into quarters.
Start drawing a pattern in the top left quarter (you can make it as easy or as hard as you like).
Reflect the pattern into the quarter next to the filled quarter.
Reflect the pattern to fill the final 2 quarters.
Colour it in.
Can you design different ones that satisfy the rules below? If any cannot be created, explain why not.
4 lines of symmetry and a rotational symmetry of order 4.
2 lines of symmetry and a rotational symmetry of order 2.
A rotational symmetry of order 3?
The number of line and rotational symmetries are different.
