Beads in a Bag

Introduction

In this lesson, you will learn what theoretical probability is (and briefly touch on the concept of experimental probability).

Hi-Low

Have a go at this Hi-Low game where you need to predict whether the next card to be turned over will have a higher or lower value than the previous card. Note: you will only be looking at the Ace (lowest) to King (highest) of Spades.

  • What is your strategy?

  • What can you calculate to help make your decision?

  • Does your strategy always work? Why or why not?

  • Repeat the game, the person with the highest money left wins!

Beads

Out of which jar on the right do you stand more of a chance of picking a dark bead? (You know what is in the jars but you cannot see into them.

  • What is your strategy? What can you calculate to help make your decision?

  • Would your strategy always work in real life? Why or why not?

Further Practice

Some of the essential skills introduced in this lesson are theoretical and experimental probabilities. Practise these relevant skills on DrFrostMaths, CorbettMaths, MyiMaths and Eedi. Watch any video and/or go through any online lesson as you see fit.
