Unit 5: Shapes
Overview
In this unit you will learn some practical skills, such as how to use compasses and protractors, find out about different types of triangle, and learn some "angle rules" that allow you to calculate the size of an angle based on the sizes of other angles in a shape or diagram.

To do well on this assessment you will need to do the following things:
Use your compasses to draw an accurate circles.
Use your protractor to construct and to measure angles.
Know the properties of the different types of triangles (equilateral, isosceles, scalene) and present them in a mathematical way.
Use labels to refer describe lines, angles, triangles, and other shapes.
Draw an accurate triangle given three pieces of information.
Draw on diagrams to show parallel lines, equal length lines, and equal size angles.
Calculate angles relating to angles around a point, angles on a straight line, angles in a triangle, and angles made by parallel and intersecting lines.
Apply angle rules for angles on a straight line, at a point, in a triangle, in quadrilaterals including those with special properties, and angles made by parallel and intersecting lines.
Justify answers stating the angle fact used at each stage.
Calculate the area and perimeter of a rectangle, a right-angled triangle, a parallelogram, a trapezium and composite shapes.
Know and be able to use appropriate terminology and labels when describing the properties square, rectangle, rhombus, parallelogram, kite, trapezium (including isosceles).
Identify and draw patterns with rotational and reflective symmetry.
Present your working fully and clearly.

During the Unit
At the beginning of the unit, use the traffic light system to rate how confident you are of the learning objectives. This will help you identify what areas you need to focus on in your lessons and self-study.
Add to the "What key skills have I learnt in the unit?" box key takeaways from your lessons and self-study. You may want use this as notes at the end of each lesson.
Add to the "What key skills do I still need to work on?" box key things that you still need further practice. Make sure you include resources like videos from DrFrostMaths, CorbettMaths, MyiMaths and Eedi etc.
At the end of the unit and prior to the assessment, use the traffic light system to rate how confident you are of the learning objectives. This will help you identify what areas you need to work on for your assessment.
After the assessment
Use the second part of the document to reflect on your assessment:
Add to the "What went well?" box a reflection of the positives. Make sure this is a reflection on the mathematics, not your effort.
Add to the "What do I need to improve on?" box reflection additional things you need to do to address the gaps of knowledge shown in the assessment. Be specific about how you can address the problems. You should start with “I need to… ”
Copy and paste what you wrote in the two boxes onto your student portfolio as part of your reflection for your target.
Upload your reflection document onto your student portfolio as evidence for your reflection.
