The Outcome

The NYU cheerleading squad once consisted of only men. In an effort to boost spirits (after World War II), a group of undergraduates called for female cheerleaders to band together in 1946, but the Board of Control for Women’s Athletics disapproved of the “shocking, unladylike” activity — even though other universities had female cheerleaders. Women first joined the squads in 1952, although they were restricted to performing at only home games.
