What it is like for our Head coach and a student athlete from varsity during Pre-season for Sheridan Softball. Mark Paxton, an outstanding and a recognized coach, has been the varsity softball coach for about 25 years. Cora Hall, an outstanding player, has been on varsity since her freshman year.
With Paxton coaching softball for over 20 years at Sheridan he is the one that always plans all the open gyms every year he’s been at sheridan. Paxton has always been head coach for Sheridan Varsity softball.
“Preseason we do as much as hitting we can. We've actually added some flexibility and core developpement to help them not just softball players but better athletes as well”, Paxton said. Paxton has achieved many things over the years. “I’ve been fortunate enough to win a state title in 2013 with a really good group of kids and a great group of assistant coaches.”
Cora Hall has been playing on varsity all her highschool years. She is now a senior playing on varsity. It is pre-season, what does she do now? “We do a lot of pre-season workouts so right now it’s hitting and yoga for right now which is new this year. Didn’t know how to feel about that. It’s definitely a lot of fun. The biggest thing is like just keeping yourself well. Healthy, not injured. Lots of hitting and fielding during the pre-season. You know I like to work out since I don’t like to sit still”, Hall said.Being on varsity takes a lot of things. Not just varsity, just any sport in general. Your physical and mental health is very important.
It is smart and just professional to always work on those things. It could be a great life changer just working tweaking on those things. Once those are kinked out and fixed it will be better for coaches to scout and coach you. Being a coachable and just a hardworking athlete just makes you better by time. “The development of a team, continuity, coming together as a family, and obviously you know looking for skill coaches are always looking for skills that set a certain athlete apart from others”, Paxton said.

With the wrestling season coming soon, the Sheridan Generals’ wrestling team has been working hard. While actual practices haven’t quite started yet, the team has started ‘open mats.’ Open mats is a student athlete run practice, since the coaches can’t technically start coaching yet. The wrestling season is looking promising for the Generals, with the many students participating in the preseason this year, making the team shape up to get better as a whole.
Some of the wrestlers include: Gage Moore, Wesley Shegog, Jacob and Logan Householder, Xavier Folk, Thaddeus Nikodym, Hunter Webb, Corbin “Beano” Price, and of course, the infamous Colton Reedy. There are many others participating, but these athletes are just some of the top athletes.
Overall, the expectations for this year are high with the talent that the team has for this season. The senior class this year has an exceptional amount of talent in itself, and the hopes are high for the wrestling program as a whole. The anticipations are high for this coming wrestling season, for both the athletes and their fans.
