Sheridan Boy’s Golf Makes MVL Runner-Up
By Isaac Young, on Thursday Sept. 26
This past week, the Sheridan Generals boys’ golf team placed 2nd overall in the MVL, their 2024 season closing. While John Glenn’s team got the title, Sheridan's 2nd place performance was impressive, matching their overall success of the season. The performance as a team translates into individual achievements as four of our golfers earned All-MVL: Wyatt Wisenhunt, Owen Cains, Canyon Daly, and Noah Wamer.
Owen Cains was asked about his All-MVL accomplishment. “It feels great to reach short-term goals while progressing towards long-term ones. All-MVL is definitely something I’ve always planned on achieving, but it’s just a simple step in the right direction leading to the entire team’s success. I am not only proud of myself, but also my teammates for an impressive and fun season,” said Cains.
The 2024 season went indisputably well, the team maintaining a 32-2 record. While both of their losses were to John Glenn, Sheridan managed to snap John Glenn’s 85 game win streak, even if they were not able to win the league.
With Sheridan’s boys’ golf season draws to an end, most of the players transition into basketball, r baseball, or offseason work, planning to better themselves and each other leading into the 2025 golf season. The golf team had an outstanding season, and our community is undoubtedly looking forward to the results of their hard work for next year.
Congratulations to everyone involved in the successes of the Sheridan Generals Boys’ Golf team, and here’s to hoping the offseason reaps as much success as their season did.
Girls Golf Takes A Swing Into The 2024 Season
By Panagiotis Pingledis, on Tuesday Sept. 24
The Sheridan girls’ 2024 golf season has been underway with new head coach Carry Garza. The girls haven’t placed under 5th while competing at MVL’s in the last couple of years, and so the pressure for a successful year was pressing. The season started in late August, and just ended this Tuesday, Sept. 3. Their season has had some low points, but overall it ended on a good note.
The sport has gained more popularity this year, more people showing involvement than in previous years. The team lost a few members who would have been seniors this season, but some have stuck through the end; Haven Jenkins, Casey Peach and Abby Gutridge. There are five players on the varsity team including the previously mentioned Haven Jenkins, Casey Peach, and Abby Gutridge, with the addition of Alice Billings, and Alisey Bourke.
This year is different than it has been in past seasons, as the team is in the process of welcoming Carry Garza as the new coach. One of the difficulties this season has been trying to form a relationship of trust with the coach and the new members of the team, on top of the usual problems that can cause a team to stumble during the season.
Like being a part of any team, golf is a commitment and takes a lot of time, so some people have trouble keeping up with it, some not always making it to practices and matches. “Nobody practices, and everyone needs to take it more seriously,” complains Jenkins. With all of the stresses on the team this year, it’s no surprise that slip ups could happen. Even with the perceived shortcomings, though, the team has managed to compete and maintain a successful season, many members of the team even honing their skills.
Sophomore Kendall Murphy is one team member who admits to really improving, saying that she is getting better match by match. “A big reason I’ve been getting better is because of all of Coach Carey’s help,” Murphy says, praising the newcomer coach. Murphy’s progress with the Coach’s help has certainly translated into other players’ skills, making Garza’s first season a flying success.
The golf season is over and may not have gone the way as some might have hoped, but it was still a great year coming; the team came in fourth at MVL’s, and 9th at District’s. The team had a pretty good season for a first year head coach, props of their improvements going to Carey Garza.
