Sheridan Generals Football defeat Watkins Memorial after heartbreaking 0-1 start
By: Jacob R. Haven Harlow, August 30, 2024
The Sheridan Generals Football team took on Watkins Memorial, Friday, Aug. 30. The entire team was very excited to get on the field and prove themselves, after last week's unfortunate loss to the Licking Valley Panthers.
“I am very excited and ready for the game.” varsity Right Guard, Gage Moore said, when asked about the game. This shows that even though the team seems to be down, they are still just as excited and ready as if they had won their first game.
The Generals fought tooth and nail to secure their victory against the Warriors. Watkins put up a good fight against the Red Rage, but in the end, it was not quite enough to stop them from winning.
Both teams played excellent defense the entire game, not letting much of anything get through without a good fight. Sheridan’s first touchdown was in the second quarter, with 3:53 on the clock, then at the last minute they decided to go with a field goal by Dominic McKinney with 33 seconds left in the half. Putting the Generals up, 10-0.
In the second half of the game, Watkins was out for blood. They scored a touchdown not long into the second half, putting the game at 10-7 Sheridan still leading, but not by much. Then, not even a minute into the fourth quarter, the Generals scored another touchdown, passing the ball to Hayden Henry, who walked the ball into the endzone. Making the game 17-7 Sheridan leads.
Both teams played hard all the way through the fourth quarter, Sheridan playing intense defense, holding off the Warrior’s offense. Then, after a few flags thrown and yards lost on penalties, the Watkins quarterback stepped back into the General’s endzone and threw the ball over 50 yards, but Logan Hupp intercepted it and that was the game, after a few quarterback kneels to run the clock out of time. Leaving the final score 17-7 Sheridan won the game, making their record 1-1.

Get Loud!: Behind the Student Section
By Kenzi Perkins, on Tuesday Aug. 27
Let’s go red! The chant that choruses through the stadium underneath the Friday night lights. The stands are filled with red-and-grey clad fans, cheering for their hometown team. On the far end of the field, the screams are the loudest, and the bleachers are teeming with high school students decked out in themed garb, ready to lose their voices yelling for the Generals: Welcome to the Rage Cage.
At the front of the roiling fray stand the senior leaders, the two students chosen to organize the themes and egg the student section on during the rumbles. Under the stadium lights, they get to see the success of their efforts, surrounded by the roar of the students, sporting the same themed attire. This year, the proud leaders are Sheridan High School seniors Tate Ruthers and Dylan Fox.
Being named leader is one of the highest honors that can be offered to a member of the Rage Cage, and the two new leaders were ecstatic when they got the news. “I was very excited. Knowing Sheridan has had a famous history in the past with student sections, it was an honor to be the male leader for my senior year. It’s just really enjoyable going out and cheering your heart out for your good friends and classmates,” Ruthers expressed when asked about his reaction to finding out that he’d been appointed.
When the two seniors were chosen, they eagerly stepped into their roles of leadership. Picking the themes of the student section for each of the games is one of their primary responsibilities, and Fox and Ruthers rose to the occasion. They considered themes that were fun and thought everyone could easily participate in. Classic themes like black out and USA are back, but the two also decided to re-implement bypassed themes like Frat.
Ruthers and Fox are keeping with many of the same traditions, like with their themes, but they’re also trying to bring about change to the student section. “I’d also like to start having a section of people going to home soccer games, baseball and softball, cross country, and track events. I definitely think it would benefit the athletes of those sports as it shows they are getting their well earned attention and support as some of those sports have been very successful,” Ruthers explained, elaborating on their plans to better the student support for the coming seasons.
With the anticipation of this year’s sports seasons, everyone is anxious to see what our new student section leaders have in store for us. Students wanting to be a part of the Rage Cage can find the themes for each game posted on Instagram and X under @barstoolgens. Fox and Ruthers’ commitment to making this year’s student section the best it can be is cemented by their inclusion of new themes, long standing traditions, and school spirit. Let’s go red!
Homecoming 2024 Football Game
By Kenzi Perkins, on Friday Sept. 27
The Homecoming football game is the highlight of many people in the community’s fall; exciting announcements, alumni night, and of course, the buzz created by the previous week’s events. This week, Sheridan High School was in a frenzy with anticipation of the coming weekend, anxiously awaiting the kickoff of our homecoming game to get things rolling. Usually, the game brings high stakes and nail-biting quarters, but this year, something was different.
Tonight, the Sheridan Generals’ football team played Riverview, who was unable to play their starters due to numerous injuries. The game was different from any Homecoming game in the recent past; it was a blowout. Sheridan won the game 62-0. Though excitement had been high for the game, the turnout was less than stellar due to the monotonous state of the game.
The stands, usually packed with scarlet-clad fans, rain or shine, on Homecoming and alumni night, weren’t nearly full. Even the screaming student section, dressed in the white-out theme, lost its luster after halftime, over half of the students leaving after a mundane first half. The Sheridan Generals football team, cheer squad and marching band stuck it out until the end, though, all groups performing at their best with the help of the alumni who came out for their alma mater.
A game well won for the Sheridan Generals, and even though it was not the most engaging football game the Red Rage had ever seen, it was still a great way to kick off our Homecoming weekend; with a satisfying win under our belt to raise our spirits.
