How To Drive In The Snow
By Kameron Van Balen, on Tuesday Jan. 28
Since we are getting far into the winter months, we expect to see a lot of snow, but do you know how to drive in it? Driving in snow can be a scary thing to do for new drivers and even older drivers, so don't feel bad about not knowing what to do if you get into a skid, a slide, or get stuck somewhere.
Skidding on the road is never a fun activity due to the fact that you can feel the very moment that you start to lose traction. Skidding however is very easy to get out of, just take your foot off the gas and steer the car in the direction it’s sliding to get traction back.
Sliding is similar to skidding but you probably won’t get traction back until the very end, again, gently move your steering wheel to the direction you want to go and don’t press that gas. If you are going to slide off the road, try to slow down by gently pressing the brakes, stomping on them will only make your slide worse.
Getting stuck is never fun, especially when you have to make it to school or work, but it is to be expected it happens to you at least once, don’t panic, it'll be okay. Depending on weather conditions, keep your car running so you don’t freeze, turn on your hazard lights and call someone if you can. If you have friends in the car and you're lightly stuck you can try and get out that way but be careful, pushing a car can be dangerous.
Students Explain: How Do I Prevent Procrastination?
By Elijah Rohozen, on Wednesday Nov. 20
Now that we’re finally into November and students at Sheridan High School are beginning to burn out, it’s becoming evident that we need to confront the bigger issue: procrastination. Many people, myself included, have struggled with or seen procrastination, so let’s talk about how we can end it.
First of all, what exactly is procrastination? Procrastination is the act of delaying tasks until the last minute, or past their deadline. There are many causes of procrastination, but some of the main ones include low self-esteem, anxiety and lack of motivation. Knowing this, let’s get into the article.
1. Minimizing Distractions
In my opinion, this is the best way to stop yourself from procrastinating. There are times when you just need to lock-in. Clean your workspace, turn off your phone and get to work. If you stick to it, then I promise that you’ll get your work done.
2. Time Management
Managing time in high school is really difficult, especially when you’re in multiple extracurricular activities and still want to have a social life. Noah Pennybacker, a junior at Sheridan High School, has this to say about it: “Ever since I started band in freshman year, I’ve had a really difficult time making time for studying and hanging out with friends,” Pennybacker said. So, how can someone involved in multiple extracurriculars still complete their work on time? Personally, I recommend drafting a calendar that you’re going to stick to. It’ll help you appropriately use your time.
3. Setting Realistic Goals
I tend to not set realistic goals for myself. I try to put everything off to the last minute, and then I overwhelm myself with loads of schoolwork. Xander Gray is a senior at Sheridan, and he’s one of my best friends, but he struggled a lot back in freshman year. “I just didn’t do a lot of my work. I said I would get to it, but I never did. I performed well on tests, but when it came to doing my schoolwork, I just never did it,” Gray said.
4. Helping Others
One of my biggest regrets is not helping some of my friends with their schoolwork back in middle school. I think some of their main issues was just not understanding how to do their work, so they just ignored it. You’re never going to lose anything by helping others, so you might as well do it. You may even make a new friend out of it.
