The Most Overused Movie and Show Tropes
By Elijah Rohozen, on Friday Dec. 13
I bet the majority of people have experienced this: spending time with family and watching a poorly written movie with even worse acting. This was my childhood. We’d settle into the couch as an over-the-top romantic comedy or cheesy movie played on the television. Personally, I’ve grown to find a sort of comfort in these types of movies, despite the fact I understand that they’re objectively not good. So, through this article, let’s talk about some of these articles. I want to explore why they’re funny, interesting or borderline problematic.
“Oooooh, it was just a dream”
This is a trope that everyone has seen at least once, and I find it funny due to the sheer stupidity of it. I’ve seen it used in some pretty atrocious ways. For example, the show “Dallas” retconned an entire season by using this trope. Other shows like “Grey’s Anatomy” and “House” have also used this trope. “House” even used this trope after the main character died.
Forced Romance Subplots
This trope is blatantly problematic. I feel like it generally just gets in the way of the film and is only put in there to check a box. In my opinion, it’s stupid to put two characters with minimal understanding of each other to get together. Also, many movies which feature this trope (Hallmark movies) promote casual cheating. One prime example of this trope is “Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker.” I feel like the movie turned mutual understanding into romance, which I felt was kind of awkward and ruined the film.
Last-Second Saves
I might have to explain this one. Have you ever seen a movie where the hero comes to the rescue just in the nick of time? That’s what a last-second save is. This movie trope is probably my favorite just because if used correctly, then it shouldn’t take away from the overall plot. Some examples of movies which use this trope are “Shrek,” “The Shining” and “X-Men: Days of Future Past.” If you didn’t notice already, all of these movies are critically acclaimed, so they’re examples of good tropes. The only bad thing about this trope is that sometimes they make the ending very predictable.
Final Thoughts:
Overall, these movie tropes are definitely overused, but some of them can be used effectively without taking away from the plot. I was curious to see how others felt about tropes, so I decided to ask someone. Zach Riffle, a junior at Sheridan High School, has this to say: “I fully understand the usage of tropes, but I definitely think some tropes are overused and some tropes aren’t used enough,” Riffle said. Clearly, he has a similar stance to me. As long as it doesn’t take away from the plot,
Top 10 Games You Must Play
By Eric Olds, on Thursday Dec. 12
These video games are a must to play if you have not already. They represent a large variety of gaming and at some point were very popular. If you are bored of the newest games coming out, take a dive into history and play one of these classics.
10. “Star Wars Battlefront 2”
This game is amazing for coming out in the year 2017. If you're a Star Wars enthusiast it's a must to play this game. It includes a campaign and three main eras to fight in. This game Comes at number 10 because of its massive decline in playerbase. It also has occasional cheaters. Nonetheless, this game is very satisfying and has hundreds of hours of content to enjoy.
9. “Satisfactory”
In this game, you build factories that produce goods and require raw and refined materials. It has just been fully released in September. This game has massive amounts of content to offer and limitless space to design factories and buildings to contain them. This game also has multiplayer capabilities which makes multitudes more enjoyable. If you like creating factories this game is perfect for you.
8. “Gears of War 4”
This game is different from most, coming out in 2016. It is a gorey game filled with guns and huge weaponry. There is a campaign and a multiplayer which has lots of different modes. 3. “Battlefield 2042”
This is the newest “Battlefield” game and is unpopular because of its terrible launch. Set in the future year of 2042 this game shows cool technology and adds some new features compared to older “Battlefield” games. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege Review The Game With Many Faces
By: Eric Olds, on Wednesday, Dec. 11
Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege is a video game which was released Dec. 1, 2015 by Ubisoft. Siege has been fairly popular in recent years due to the large number of content creators making videos and streams on their gameplay. Reviewing Siege will show the worth of the game and what the pros and cons are.
In my opinion, Siege is a well balanced game with lots of content to offer. Siege is not pay to win and offers lots of creativity when it comes to countering and creating strategies. Some key downsides include the massive cheater epidemic, the skill based matchmaking system and the overpowered shield operators. Some operators in Siege also have very useless gear and weapons which are arguably better off not existing.
I agree with most of Siege’s downsides but believe that they do not outweigh the pros. The amount of executable strategies are nearly limitless and the meta is always changing. This makes professional Siege very interesting with their insane tactics and nearly limitless skill ceiling.
Tyler Blackburn, is a junior, Blackburn has around 2000 hours on Siege. “Personally, I think Siege is one of the best first person shooters there is. It’s more realistic than Call of Duty and a top tier game,” Blackburn said.
Blackburn certainly has the experience to know what he’s talking about. Siege’s destructive walls and good sound system allows for the player to be immersed and play around their surroundings. These two things and many others make Siege the game it is today.
Brady Hamm, is a junior, Hamm has played Siege for around 70 hours. “My major criticisms with siege would be all the cheaters and bugs,” and, “My favorite strategy would be picking Azami and barricading myself into a small room and just chilling,” Hamm said.
In conclusion, Siege has many bugs and issues but all games usually do. Siege is constantly being updated and changed based on what the community says. The anti-cheat is being upgraded every year. Also the matchmaking system is going to receive an update. Siege has downsides but they are always being worked on and do not outnumber the amount of fun people have playing every day.
“Moana 2” Review (SPOILERS)
By Franchesca Baysa, on Monday Dec. 9
On Nov. 27, “Moana 2” was released. You can find this movie in theatres, or on your favorite streaming service. Over almost 170 million people have already watched it, and it's sure that more are on the way to. WHile the movie is already gaining steady popularity, many people have their own opinions. I will be comparing the opinions of two people that have differing opinions on some aspects of the movie: Hannah Kaufman, a girl that loved the movie, and Zach Riffle that disliked it, favoring the first “Moana."
As we know in “Moana 2” everyone has gotten older and many new characters are introduced, including Moana's little sister. “I like that it matured a little bit with the characters,” Kaufman said. I agree with her, though it took me a few minutes to get used to the older characters and their new appearances.
The songs are very controversial. Both Riffle and Kaufman both agreed saying they weren’t the best as the songs from “Moana." “Not really up there with the OG ones,” Riffle said. “I liked the music from the original better,” Kaufman agreed. The songs weren’t as catchy as those in the first, but I still thought that the soundtrack matched the movie well.
While there was a plot twist in the movie, it wasn't as exciting as some would have liked.“It was done in typical Disney fashion, so there wasn't anything that I was too shocked to see,” Riffle said. Personally, I enjoyed the plot twist, and thought that it was a worthwhile contribution to the storyline. It was when Moana turned into a demigod. It was really cool how she got her tattoos on her arms and everything. Also, how she got it was pretty cool.
"Moana 2," although maybe imperfect, was still enjoyed by both Kaufman and Riffle. “I thought it was pretty good. Would I watch it again? Probably not, but I thought it was a pretty solid movie,” Riffle said. “I want a third,” Kaufman said. I thought it was a well thought out movie, and would recommend it to anyone that loved the first “Moana”.
