When You Find Yourself in a Marching Band

By Jerry Johnson

The Indian Creek High School Marching Band had the first competition on September 11th. Jerry Johnson reports on the day, noting that their theme this year is "When You Find Yourself." In their first competition, they seem to have done just that!

Our day started out with a morning rehearsal. For the first hour we split into sectionals to work on our Marching, Visuals, and Music. We continue prep work, including eating and dressing throughout the morning. A little later we began loading the buses and taking attendance. Once we got closer to the school we began to sing our parts. We do this because it is the last “run through” that we get before arriving at the competition.

We got to the parking lot, unloaded everything, and headed to do a quick warm-up. After that we headed to the field to perform. Usually the judges walk around on the field while we perform, but things have changed since last time we competed, so the judges were up in the press box watching us from above. Aiyanna Withems said, “On a scale of 1-10 I would say a solid 12.”

Overall, we did really well. We did not place, but we did get a participation award; Mrs Heavilin reminded us that we are number one in her heart. "Sometimes we get really nervous," she continued, "but I think it was a great first week out.” We were also number one in the people’s hearts and received People’s Choice award. This may have stemmed from audience interaction, which Toby Sturgell noticed during the performance. He said, “I don’t know whether it was from the audience interaction or if we did really well. From my perspective I feel the show looked and sounded like our best performance. I feel this is good start to our season and I am excited to see where we go from here.” Our hard work never stops though, and we are going to continue to improve our show as time goes on. Nick Long noted that he, “Can’t wait to see how far we go in the future.”

Where we went in the short-term future was to Greenwood on September 19th where we swept the field and took home not only another People's Choice award, but also first place! Our remaining regular season competitions will be September 25th at Ben Davis, and October 2nd at Zionsville. Our ISSMA Preliminaries will be on October 9th at Whiteland Community High School.
