Teacher of the Year is a sought-after title amongst teachers at NECP. It means that not only are your students engaged with the content that is being taught, but they are retaining it and applying it in real-life situations. Students were asked to vote on who they would like to see as teacher of the year and agreed that Mrs. Ashley Dow was worthy of the title.
Mrs. Dow teaches 8th Grade Science and Honors Earth and Environmental. She is also the Beta Club Advisor. I asked her a few questions about being declared Teacher of the Year, the first being her feelings about it all. “I feel so grateful to be a part of our school, and recognized by my fellow teachers as deserving of this honor,” she states. Then, I asked her what made it possible for her to be Teacher of the Year, and she said that she tries to show up and do a good job, despite anything that might be going on in her life. Her advice to any teacher who was new was to not be so hard on themselves. “The skills of being a good teacher take time and trying to put students first is the most important step,” she says.
Her statement about achieving her title was, “This year was an especially hard year with the loss of my mother and my husband’s second win over cancer, and I would not have been successful without Jesus and the support of the NECP team.”
On Saturday, April 27th NECP had their Spring fling from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. At the event, there were baked goods, crafts, jewelry, stickers, keychains, and many more items. This year the first 200 students and parents who showed up got a free hotdog. There was also an option to buy BBQ plates which were $12. The students and occasionally a parent or two participated in several activities such as playing on bouncy houses, face painting, and Cow Patty Bingo. Mr. Brite and NECP parent, Liz Pollard, picked the correct square in Cow Patty Bingo and shared the $1,000 prize. A sponsored fishing tournament was also held at the pond on campus. The fun ended around 2 PM. The event was a huge success and everyone had a great time.
Mrs. Foster's art class is currently making carving blocks. The blocks are made by drawing on paper and rubbing the ink onto the block, and the last step is to carve the picture into the block. Mrs. Foster is an art major, she enjoys working with people and seeing students realize they are better than they think they are. She believes that if the students have the right tools they can do any art - even art they think they aren't good at. She is always trying to keep the students interested by switching projects frequently and staying organized. “Always neat to get better at what you're good at” - Mrs. Foster.
