Valentine's Day Dance
On Saturday, February 10th, NECP had their 7th- 10th grades Valentine’s dance. The gymnasium was decorated with balloons, streamers, and twinkling lights. The girls were wearing gorgeous dresses and the guys' tuxes. Students had a great time enjoying the delicious food and drinks at the dance. They also loved the fun and creative photo booths set up for picture-taking. Everyone there was having a blast with their friends, and taking lots of photos. The DJ was playing a variety of great music keeping everyone up dancing and singing along. Overall, the school dance was a huge success, and it was clear that everyone had a great time. It was a wonderful opportunity for students to come together, have fun, and make memories.

NECP had its first blood drive in the school gym on February 22nd. Exactly 29 pints/3.63 gallons of blood were donated, which exceeded the original goal. This event was organized by NECP senior Briar Scott. She was the idealist and arranger of the blood drive, having to start the process by first asking the school principal, Mr. Franks. Once his approval was granted, she needed to contact the American Red Cross Association and began organizing the event with them. When hosting a blood drive, the organizer provides a location for the drive to take place. In this instance, Ms. Scott provided NECP’s school gym for the location. After the location was secured, and the date decided, it was then time to spread the word. Throughout January and February, NECP and Ms. Scott would post on Facebook about the upcoming blood drive frequently. There were also a plethora of fliers posted around the school. When the day came, Ms. Scott and the lobotomists with the Red Cross were met with a great deal of success! Ms. Scott and Mr. Franks expressed their wishes to make this an annual event and plan to have another blood drive sometime in April. When asked why she decided to organize a blood drive, Ms. Scott revealed that her mother had once received a life-saving blood transfusion and due to that experience, she has donated blood four times before the Covid-19 pandemic. We are proud of our senior's initiative and leaving behind a wonderful legacy at NECP.

The Scholastic Book Fair
The Scholastic Book Fair is a yearly fundraiser held at schools to raise money for our school for years to come. This year, our book fair was a success as they sold over 5,000 books as of February 21. Mrs. Arnold, who runs the Media Center in the 2-7 building, states that they have made over $35,000 in revenue as of February 21. Among the variety of books sold, Pokemon and other comic books seem to be the most popular with kids. Kids of older age groups also seem to enjoy escape-themed books, according to Mrs. Arnold. “This is my first time doing it but it has been so exciting to see all of the kids excited to see the new books and all of the new characters that are out,” states Mrs. Arnold.

Literacy Night
On February 20th, NECP’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) organized the “Love of Learning” Literacy Night. Many grades participated in this event, providing class projects, artwork, and even live presentations. The event started with Eric Evans, Edgecombe County Manager, giving an inspiring speech on how to improve Edgecombe County. He advocated for supporting the community and engaging the organizations that are already helping Edgecombe improve. After PTO updates ( which will be covered in the “Events” articles) and dismissal from Mr. Franks, parents, teachers, and students were dismissed to break-out sessions. Each grade presented a different session about what they learned over the semester. The seventh-grade class did a live presentation of The Outsiders, a book they had read in class. In addition, students advertised infomercials for inventions. Mr. Steven’s eighth-grade English class acted out parts of Lord of the Flies. This showed their knowledge and interest in the book.
