Mary Black is an NCAS and NCEO Non-executive Director and spent 20 months from the start of the pandemic leading the public health response to Covid-19 in Scotland.
Mary is an international public health leader and writer from Northern Ireland and mentors women and minoritised students for careers in science and medicine. Her scientific work is widely published in peer-reviewed journals, and her essays and opinion columns feature in the professional press. She is an award-winning and published author (memoir and fiction).
Mary's career has included clinical and public health work in Ireland and the UK, over ten years with WHO and UNICEF in Balkan countries and international consulting in health improvement, health services, social care and data systems. She helped found a medical school in far North Queensland, set up the medical evacuation airlift from Sarajevo during the 1990’s war, and founded two technology companies. Mary joined NCAS as a Non-executive Director in 2019.
