ABSTRACT

Air pollution remains a core component of NCAS’ activities, whose impacts range from climate forcing, to ecosystem function, to human health. While many aspects of air pollution have improved over the decades in developed countries such as the UK, there are many imperative scientific challenges we face. As some pollutants diminish, others sources and microenvironments have risen to prominence, that need to be better understood if we are to meet increasingly strict targets. Also, as the composition of the atmosphere changes, so too does the atmospheric chemistry affecting various health and climate impacting components. As our climate changes, we need to improve our understanding of how weather and climate interacts with air quality, so that we can better predict the impacts of extreme weather events, and as energy sources rapidly change with net zero, we need to properly anticipate any potential air quality co-benefits or unintended consequences associated with these. Here I will discuss the challenges and opportunities to air pollution science that have been identified that NCAS is well placed to address in the coming years, and give some recent examples of this research in action.
