Abstract: Globally-averaged methane concentrations are accelerating their climb, with 2020 and 2021 being record growth years. Increasing evidence from carbon isotopic measurements suggests that this rise is dominated by increases in biogenic methane sources, particularly in the Tropics and at northern high latitudes. This talk will explore the knowns and unknowns in the global methane budget and what is being done to decrease uncertainty. We will present results from the NERC MAMM, GAUGE and MOYA projects, which tackled global methane sources and processes, and compare results from targeted measurement campaigns in Africa and the Arctic with carbon process models. It will also present recent work to directly measure methane fluxes at local scales using UAVs.
