UNIT 9: Value/Form

KEY TERMS:

• Form:
  • Form is a 3D figure or object and encloses volume.
• Geometric Forms:
  • Geometric forms are forms with hard, defined lines and angles that do not vary too much.
• Organic Forms:
  • Organic forms are forms that are free-flowing (created by nature).
• Open Forms:
  • Open forms are forms that have spaces that can be looked into.
• Closed Forms:
  • Closed forms are self-contained with no open spaces.
• Value:
  • The relative lightness and darkness of an object.
• Value Scale:
  • It is a system of organizing values; these shades of grey make up the "meat" of the drawing and helps to create the illusion of depth (3D)
• Light Source:
  • The most luminous element affecting any given environment.
• Highlight:
  • A reflection, focused or diffused, of the light source.
• Midtone (Halftone):
  • It is the value intermediate between light and value.
• Cast Shadow:
  • A shadow cast by an object or figure in a painting or other picture.
• Core Shadow:
  • Is the fuzzy band between the midtone and the area of reflected light on a rounded form such as a sphere.
