UNIT 14: Space and Perspective

OBJECTIVES:

• Through examination of space and perspective, you will create a cityscape of your dreams that demonstrates your understanding of space and perspective.

KEY TERMS:

• Space:
  • It is the distance around, between, above, below, and within an object.
• Overlapping:
  • The placement of objects over one another in order to create the illusion of depth. It establishes some sort of size and distance.
• Size:
  • The relationship between objects and their environment to give a sense of depth.
• Proportion:
  • Refers to size of parts of a whole (things within an object).
• Scale:
  • Refers to size of an object (a whole) in relation to another object (a whole).
• Value:
  • The relative lightness or darkness of an object.
• Position/Placement:
  • Is the arrangement of objects within a space.
• Rule of Thirds:
  • A powerful compositional technique for making images more interesting and dynamic.
• Horizon Line:
  • The physical or visual boundary where the sky separates from land or water.
• Detail:
  • It is the small elaborated elements, treatment of or attention to items or particular parts in an artwork.
• Linear Perspective:
  • Parallel lines that are represented as converging (going inward) so as to give the illusion of depth and distance.
• One-Point Perspective:
  • A depiction or an object or scene from one vanishing point.
• Two-Point Perspective:
  • Parallel lines along the edge of an object that meet at two vanishing points on the horizon line.
• Vanishing Point:
  • The point at which lines of perspective converge (goes toward); something that grows smaller or increasingly faint, disappears altogether.
• Orthogonal Lines:
  • Straight diagonal lines drawn to connect points around the edges of an object/person to the vanishing point.
