ESSENTIAL QUESTION(S):
- What is a self-portrait?
- How can we use value to make a 2D object/item appear 3D or realistic on a flat surface?
OBJECTIVES:
- Through examination of the purpose of portraiture and identity, you will draw a self- portrait illustrating your identity using a wide range of value to dictate the atmosphere.
KEY TERMS:
- Value:
- The relative lightness and darkness of an object.
- Value Scale:
- It is a system of organizing values; these shades of grey make up the "meat" of the drawing and helps to create the illusion of depth (3D)
- Light Source:
- The most luminous element affecting any given environment.
- Highlight:
- A reflection, focused or diffused, of the light source.
- Midtone (Halftone):
- It is the value intermediate between light and value.
- Cast Shadow:
- A shadow cast by an object or figure in a painting or other picture.
- Core Shadow:
- Is the fuzzy band between the midtone and the area of reflected light on a rounded form such as a sphere.
- Self-Portrait:
- A portraiture is any artistic representation of a person, in which the face and its expression is predominant. The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person.
- Identity:
- Is the way in which we perceive and express ourselves.
SELF-PORTRAIT PROJECT DIRECTIONS:
You will create a small scale self-portrait of your identity that incorporates a wide range of values. You will use the grid method to help you setup your portrait and include a wide range of values to set the atmosphere of your self-portrait. Refer to the examples below for ideas. Follow and check off the steps below to ensure that you are completing this project to the best of your ability.
- Take selfie.
- Change photograph to black and white.
- Go to www.griddrawingtool.com to create grid on black and white image. Download photo with grid and save to Photos on iPad.
- Start final paper. Make sure to receive the correct drawing paper from Ms. Moreno.
- Submit Final Project to Google Classroom!
