ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:

What is Day of the Dead?

What are Calavera masks?

What is the purpose of the Calavera mask?

How can we use line patterns to represent the personality/ character of the person/pet the mask is for?

OBJECTIVES:

To have a better understanding of the function of line, students will create a Calavera mask using 5 line patterns that represent a loved one or a celebrity/pet a student admired.
You will discuss and research the significance of a calavera mask for the Day of the Dead celebration.
You will use a variety a of line patterns to represent the personality and character of the person the mask represents. Refer back to the different types of lines (meandering, flowing, jagged, etc.) to help build your line patterns.

KEY TERMS:

Day of the Dead:
- A mass of confusedly interlaced or intertwined letters in line patterns.
Calavera Mask:
- A paper mâché skull mask
Paper Mâché:
- Paper mixed with glue and other materials or of layers of paper glued and pressed together, molded when moist to form various articles, and becoming hard and strong when dry.
Pattern:
- A repeated decorative design.
Line:
- A point in motion.
Emotion:
- A natural instinctive state of mind deriving from one's circumstances, mood, or relationships with others.

NAME TANGLE PROJECT DIRECTIONS:

For this project, you are going to create your own calavera mask that represents a loved one/ pet/ celebrity who passed away using at least 5 or more line patterns. Each line must represent the adjective you used to describe the person/pet. You will need to include the following:

Your 5 or more line patterns (these are created based off adjectives that describe person/pet)
5 or more colors to match each line pattern
Extra Items that represent the person/pet such as: glitter, flowers, etc.

History and Culture Research activity in pairs.
Bubble Map/Line Pattern/Pattern Color planning stage.
2 Sketch designs
Start Final Project (receive feedback from Ms. Moreno at least 3 times throughout the process.
Submit Final Project to Google Classroom!
