ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:
- What is line?
- What is the function of line?
- What are the characteristics of line?
- How can line be used to create 3D forms?
OBJECTIVE(S):
- This exercise will help you take a step back from your familiar drawing techniques, and encourage you to consider the functionality of line to create 3D forms.
- The purpose of this kind of practice is to force your left (thinking) side of the brain to give up identifying what you draw. Upside down drawing is a fascinating study of learning to see the way an artist sees, while not actually identifying what you are depicting or seeing.
KEY TERMS:
- Contour:
- an outline, especially one representing or bounding the shape or form of something.
- Line:
- a point moving in space.
- Horizontal Lines:
- suggest a calmness when used in a composition
- Vertical Lines:
- vertical lines seem to reach toward the sky suggesting growth and inspiration
- have a sense of boldness, strongness, and stability
- Thin Lines:
- can be timid, delicate, or weak
- Diagonal Lines:
- show action, falling, leaning, or growing
- Pointed or Jagged Lines:
- both express uncertainty, anger, or frustration
- Meandering and Flowing Lines:
- Meandering lines- whimsical and happy
- Flowing lines- graceful and mystical
NOISE ART PROJECT DIRECTIONS:
For this project, you will apply your knowledge of lines and how it pertains to the creation of 3D forms by recreating images upside down. You will place the provided image upside down and attempt to reproduce it. Carefully look at the contours (edges) and lines that you are making, and try to see them in a purely abstract way. Try not to think of the shapes in any kind of figurative context. When you finish, turn your drawing and the image the right way up.
