Welcome to the UMS Orchestras! At UMS, students have the option of selecting orchestra as one of their elective classes. UMS believes in the importance of our musicians being able to explore multiple elective options. Because of this, a student who elects to participate in orchestra will still be able to choose one additional elective in 7th grade, and 2 additional electives in 8th grade. We are very fortunate in that all orchestra classes are scheduled as a class during the school day. Students have their orchestra class every other day for 80 minutes throughout the school year. Here is some more information about the UMS Band Program.
There are 2 sections of 7th grade orchestra and 2 sections of 8th grade orchestra.
Each year, there are about 150 students who participate in our UMS Orchestra Program.
Each section of orchestra is balanced so that all students can rehearse hearing all parts.
The two sections of 7th grade orchestra combine together and the 2 sections of 8th grade orchestra combine together for concerts.
Every orchestra class has 2 teachers. This allows us to teach lessons, sectionals, chamber music, and help students who may be switching instruments all during class. We never pull students from other classes for orchestra.
Co-Curricular Chamber Orchestra
The UMS Chamber Orchestra provides an opportunity for our orchestra students to audition for a select ensemble that learns more advanced repertoire in a shorter time frame. Students must demonstrate a commitment to practice. Please contact Ms. Yavorsky for more information. This ensemble is a co-curricular activity that meets weekly after school and performs on the Winter Concert and Spring Concert.
