Katie was a member of the St. Bernard's 2018 Spring Spirit Assembly Champion team, which remains her proudest achievement to date. This past year, Katie worked for the Devil’s Advocate as a Sports editor, inarguably the best section of the paper. She is the president of the (unofficial) Spikeball club and regularly dominates games in the Journalism room. Katie possesses the unique talent of sleeping with her eyes closed. Next year, Katie will study Nursing at the University of Delaware and hopes to make some really good friends like Mr. LaQuatra’s “friends” from the Navy. Since almost everyone in the Freedy family is a pharmacist, Katie has been heavily involved with drugs throughout her entire life, and enjoyed researching medication options for treating autism. She has always been interested in the medical field and learned a lot about the ways autism affects the body and mind, and the various ways different therapies are used to treat symptoms.
Casey is so excited to be attending the University of Maryland, College Park this fall as a journalism major (Go Terps!). She was the co-Editor-in-Chief of the Devil's Advocate last semester and was on the tennis team. She also likes to travel and one day hopes to participate in a Sierra Club kayaking trip. Having taken classes like journalism and AP Lang, Casey feels confident with her ability to write and investigate topics, such as the autism spectrum, well. She babysits to make a living for herself and is a coach for Jump Bunch Fitness where she teaches children ages 3-8 various sports. She has had to work with kids on the spectrum before first hand. She hopes that this website informs the public, using rhetoric skills learned in AP Lang, about the autism spectrum and how to address living with the disorder. Casey also got a check plus on every homework assignment this year, which makes her extremely credible.
Next year, Kate is excited to attend the University of Pittsburgh to study molecular biology with a focus on biochemistry on the pre-med track (#H2P). Over the 2017-2018 school year, she was on the girls golf team and in the 54th annual Medallion Ball. She would like to thank AP Language and Composition, AP Psychology, Honors Organic Chemistry, AP Physics: Mechanics, AP Calculus BC, and Honors Anatomy for preparing her for college in her senior year both academically and learning how to handle a difficult course load with little sleep. On the weekends she likes to hang out with her dogs and her friends. Through out her time at Mount Lebanon and by taking AP Biology, she has become interested in the genetics behind diseases and disorders, so researching the genetics and potential causes behind autism are right up her alley. Also, in AP Language and Composition, she became very aware of the public education system in the United States . She hopes that this website informs the public, using rhetoric skills learned in AP Language and Composition, about the autism spectrum and how to address living with the disorder.
