One 17 year old female answered questions about the severity of the issue. She stated, "I think it is sad because a lot of my peers are getting addicted to their juuls and it will be very hard for them to quit." She continued that a lot of her friends who have begun to juul frequently are not aware of the harmful effect or the speed at which they can become addicted.
Age: Gender:
How often (if ever) do you juul or are you ever around juuls?
Are you familiar with the alleged effects of these items?
Have you ever juuled in school?
What are your thoughts on juuling becoming more popular in high schools across the nation?
Do you think it is an issue?
Is it just a high school issue or do you see it evolving into a later in life issue as well?
Another student, male 18, had similar thoughts that students and peers do not realize the severity of the issue that is developing. When asked about the severity he stated, "Sort of, it can be fun but most kids don’t realize how harmful it can be and it’s not regulated enough. Also, kids are starting to use these items too young." He surfaced another strong point that over time this issue of e-cigarettes can develop into many other problems including the movement back towards cigarettes, which are even more harmful.
Staggering numbers across all grades were reported in our anonymous survey during a lunch period in the high school. It was found that people in the junior and senior classes owned a juul more often. However, the amount of people who only use juuls across the school are not different as there are large amounts in each grade.
A potential flaw of this sampling is that people may not have answered truthfully because they did not want to be seen as someone that vapes. Further, they do not want to be told the negative consequences so they can continue to do this without issue, hesitation, or worry. Although the numbers may have been skewed because of these variables, the amount of students who have admitted to using these devices are staggering. Almost all of the students knew what a juul was but were not aware of the negative consequences of these actions. It is important for education about this topic to take place to stop the issue before it becomes a much larger problem.
Many students who were asked about the health risks of e-cigarettes said they had heard of the issues but were not certain of the specific, looming threats that are beginning to effect teens across the United States. While it may be widely known that using a vape of any kind is not completely safe, many students see it as a low risk activity and continue to use these devices in social settings. As many administrators, including Joel Thompson, have mentioned it is important to show the students what the true risks are so that they can become involved in a discussion and do not remain unaware of the effects of these devices.
