The film industry possesses the ability to capture an audience through different directorial choices such as lighting, camera angles, dialogue, and hidden motifs. Directors are capable of harnessing a specific issue and, through those techniques, deliver almost subliminal messages to the audience. The Black Lives Matter movement has become a particularly popular topic of interest in the most recent box office. In fact, many films have been produced addressing this issue in stark contrast. The social-thriller/horror film “Get Out” (top right) addresses the Black Lives Matter movement through a critical lens to show the audience the pains and struggles of black Americans, while Marvel’s “Black Panther” (bottom right) explores the same issue but rather glorifies black culture rather than focusing on oppression.
