School Health Services

At MHS we believe that the health of students affects their ability to learn. To this end, we have a full-time, certified school nurse-teacher in the building during school hours. The school-based clinic can be located in Room 81.

Students should inform their parents/guardians if they don't feel well before coming to school.

While students are encouraged to minimize their time out of school, current COVID self-monitoring protocols leave little room for students to attend school if they're feeling under the weather.

Airing on the side of caution, students are encouraged to remain home if they are displaying one or more of the following symptoms:

Reporting and the School Nurse

Additionally it should be noted that parents/guardians are responsible for contacting the school nurse regarding any significant illness or injuries that may need to be monitored.

During the school day, students are asked to report to their classroom teacher prior to visiting the clinic. With the exception of emergencies, students must present an approved pass to visit the nurse's office.

Students who are ill and wish to go home must be dismissed by the nurse. If the nurse is not available, students should report to the Attendance Office (found in the main office suite). From here parents/guardians will be contacted for a dismissal authorization. Students are kindly asked to not call their parent/guardian directly from their cell phone to obtain authorization for dismissal. To be dismissed, verbal permission must be delivered to an authorized school employee.

Medication and Delivery

Anyone needing to take medication during the school day must discuss this with the school nurse and will be required to have a written order from their health care provider. Students needing inhalers, EpiPens, or diabetic medications may self-carry during school hours with a doctor's order on file in the nurse's office. No medication should be carried or shared with any other student at school.

The MHS Health Clinic has standing orders for several Over-the-Counter (OTC) medications that may be given to a student as needed. The purpose is to treat minor illnesses (i.e. headaches, cramps, heartburn, etc.) with the hope of  encouraging students to remain at school. Parent permission is needed in writing for the nurse to be able to provide students with these OTC medications.

Finally, medications may be delivered by the MHS school nurse-teacher ONLY if the student has returned the Parental Consent for Over the Counter Medications at MHS form FOUND HERE. Please note that this form requires a signature from a parent/guardian.
