Athletics
Athletics: MHS is committed to providing our students with opportunities to discover and expand their team building experience. We give each of our students the chance to play on one of our 32 sport teams. Students 14 and up are encouraged to participate in one or more activities, while maintaining academic success, and a positive attendance record (including punctuality). Participating in sports and/or extracurricular activities is a privilege.
Middletown High School Athletic Code
Student-Athlete and Spectator Expectations
- All students attending school-sponsored events are expected to display good sportsmanship and proper behavior and are subject to all rules and regulations of Middletown High School. This applies to all events, whether they are held on the high school campus or at an off-campus location.
- Participants and spectators should be aware of and practice the essential elements of good sportsmanship, which include:
- Respect for players, coaches and officials. o Knowledge, understanding and appreciation for contest rules and host school policies.
- Maintenance of self-control.
- Recognition and appreciation of skills of local and visiting teams.
- All student athletes and students who participate in extracurricular activities are required to attend a Chemical Health and Student Safety Workshop once in a school year with a parent/guardian.
- Students are accountable for athletic uniforms and equipment/supplies issued to them. These items are to be returned within a three-day period immediately following the end of a season.
- In the event that the requirements are not met within the stipulated time, notification of same will be mailed to the student’s parents in the form of a bill. The student will be considered ineligible for athletics until uniform/equipment is returned or the bill has been paid.
- Students must follow all policies set forth by the Athletic Department and/or the activity sponsor. Students who are deemed academically ineligible after trying out and/or being selected for a team or club/activity may seek reinstatement during intra-term week – provided their grades have been brought up to the minimum standard – by contacting the Athletic Director or the Principal’s designee. (For specific academic requirements, see Eligibility section, below).
Representing MHS in Rhode Island Interscholastic League (RIIL) Athletics is a privilege. Athletes (and all students associated with athletic teams) should understand that this privilege carries with it some very personal responsibilities to teammates, coaches, Middletown High School, and the Town of Middletown. Dedication, a willingness to sacrifice, the desire to improve, and the practice of self-discipline are all elements of skill development.
Equally important, however, is the ability to conduct oneself in a manner that adheres to team and school regulations which includes coming to school on time. Adherence to those regulations will promote the development of student athletes who will not only demonstrate athletic prowess, but also display the characteristics of responsible school and community citizenship.
It is essential that an athlete clearly understands all standards of performance to which all MHS athletes are expected to adhere. They will be enforced by the Principal, all Head and Assistant Coaches, the Director of Athletics and the RIIL.
Eligibility
The following eligibility policy applies to athletics and all other approved extracurricular activities.
- To be eligible, students must have passed 60% of the previous quarter’s course load (i.e have received an "F" grade in no more than 2 courses). This is a rule set forth by the Rhode Island Interscholastic League and is non-negotiable.
- Note: Fall sports and activities must use - the 4th quarter grade from the previous school year to establish eligibility students not meeting the 60% rule must wait until the end of the next marking period (end of quarter) to regain eligibility.
- At the end of each quarter, if a student is passing 60% of their coursework but has a grade point average (GPA) that is below 2.0 for that quarter, the student is placed on academic probation. Students placed on probation can practice with their respective teams but must earn, through academic improvement, the ability to participate in competitions/events.
- Students who are placed on academic probation must:
- Have participated in the original tryout and made the team/activity.
- Request a "Reassessment of Grade" form for bi-weekly grades from the Athletic Director or Advisor.
- The student (not the athletic director or advisor) should be requesting grades from their teachers
- The Athletic Director/Advisor will verify the updated, bi-weekly grades, this will not be done before 12:00 pm Friday of each week.
- If the student has achieved a GPA of 2.0 or more with these bi-weekly grades, they will be allowed to participate in competitions/events until the next bi-weekly grade check-in.
- Note: Once the student is eligible, it is the advisor/coach’s discretion will determine when the student is ready to compete or participate. It is the goal of this amendment to serve as an achievement incentive for ineligible students.
- Eligibility will be determined at the end of each quarterly marking period. Ineligible students will be informed by the Athletic Director/Advisor the day grades are electronically submitted for report cards. If the student’s GPA is at or above a 2.0 for the current marking period, they will regain their full eligibility.
- Freshman (Gr 9) student-athletes will have grades assessed during the interim of the first quarter. Failure to meet the 60% passing and 2.0 GPA threshold will result in immediate placement on academic probation and all above guidelines will be followed.
